floating previews and triggers

you know when you pass your cursor over a thread title, it allows you to see part of what is written in that thread in a floating box before you click on it (hope i'm making sense)...well, doesnt this sort of wreck the trigger warning labelling system if people run the risk of accidently passing their cursor over a triggering thread title and seeing something they wouldnt have been exposed to normally without clicking on it first??

i dunno, coz im not easily triggered, and when i am it has to be a photo, but i was just wondering for the sake of those that are. i mean, if a thread is labelled 'graphic' and someone knew they couldnt handle it and chose not to click on it, and then brushed their cursor over and read something they couldnt deal with, wouldnt that be a bad thing??

just a ponderance. perhaps Harley has already weighed this up??

I always thought, the reason we didn't have floating preveiws on the old site was for that very reason. I find them so helpful, personally though.

Perhaps they could be taken off for the serious boards perhaps?

SV, I understand what you're saying, and it's a good concern to raise.

I think that all it would mean is that people have to be a little more careful when looking through the thread listings, more so in the first few weeks, until it becomes more natural; from my experience, you've got to hold the cursor over the thread title for a relativly long time before the actual preview box comes up, and even when it does, it is only the first line or two from the post.

It could just be a case of people being extra-vigilant about where their cursor is, and triggering titles.

In terms of "does it defeat the purpose of trigger warnings" - I have to say, I don't think it does. If you are feeling in a "triggered mood", you could avoid previewing the titles with trigger warnings, but quite easily look over any other thread.

Good thinking, though :)

I do agree with the point raised well done,

but I feel overall that Jo is correct, and that people will just be careful to avoid previewing triggering posts.

I could also make those previews shorter, so there is less chance of them displaying triggering phrases. However that does reduce the value of the previews of course.

Sadly due to the way the forums work I can't switch them on only for the non serious boards
