Nothing bad will happen. It is really positive that you are going to get help, well done, it must have taken much courage. I am really proud of you. This is the first step to getting better and fighting your illness. My thoughts will be with you. Let me know how you get on and what the doctor is going to do for you.
They'll probably chat with you about how you've been feeling recently, and your struggles, and then will probably refer you on to a counsellor or other people which are better trained to help.
Let us know how it goes!
Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…
you once called your brain a hard drive, well say hello to the virus.
Well done for taking that difficult first step in going to the Doctors. There is nothing to worry about.
As you are over 16, you do not need parents to be involved if you do not wish and nothing you say can be disclosed to them without your consent. What can happen depends on what your issues are, but your GP will ask questions about what has been going on, your moods etc. The best way to answer these is honestly, as then they can best work out any help you may need, medicine and such.
The only time your parents will be consulted is if they feel you require assistance, supervision (for your own or others well-being) or if they feel you need to go to a ward or other service. However, these are steps that are only taken after you have had the initial talk with your GP and only if they feel it is urgent... if so, they should tell you this so you are prepared and can have your say.
I hope your appointment goes well. PM if you want to chat more and let us know how it goes?

If the Human brain were so simple that we could understand it, we would be so simple that we wouldn't.
Holly hun, I just wanted to say I've read this and I'm so proud of you. I've tried to type out a reply but everything I type keeps looking wrong so I'll just give you *hugs*.
I'll talk to you on msn when I can :)
Expanding on what Roiben said about involvement of parents:
In the UK, essentially a minor who the doctor belives to be competent ( ie. has the capacity to understand their diagnosis, treatment etc according to a guideline) is entitled to exactly the same rights to confidentiality as adult. This means that they will only speak to someone else ( eg your parents) if you are considered a risk to yourself, or to others, or if they are demanded to disclose information about your health by a court of law.
Breaking confidentiality would be rare on a first trip to the doctors. I was your age when I first presented, and she didnt involve them.
As for what will happen, she or he will usually ask you to describe whats going on in your own words, and they will then ask you some specific questions- a bit about your family history, your current lifestyle, your mood, how well you sleep/ eat/ concentrate, whether you self harm or feel suicidal. A lot of people worry if they admit to self harming, then the doctor will immediately want to see- some will ask to see and some won't. But they can't FORCE you to do any thing you dont want ( unless they were sectioning you) so if you're not comfortable with it, then thats ok. You may also get asked to fill in a mini quiz, which is to help the doctor understand more about where your illness is at.
If the doctor feels you need further help, they should then discuss all the different options with you in regards to treatment, so that you can make an informed decision about what you want. Again they can't force any particular treatment on you. Some family doctors may offer to prescribe meds, others won't without the agreement of a psychiatrist, so they may well refer you on if they think that is a possibility. You could also get referred to your local community team or some GP practises offer their own psychologist/counsellor. Another alternative is that they may feel that they would like to monitor you for themselves for a bit and just see how you go, in which case you'd probably be offered a follow up appointment usually in 2-3 weeks.
As the others have said, congrats for making such a brave decision about going to the doctors. I really hope it goes ok. And remember if you dont get the answers you want from one doctor, keep trying because you are absolutely worth it and you deserve to be given the support you need to help you get back on track.
Well done!! Thats awesome! Im really proud of you, i know its not easy to go to the doctors but i think your really brave. I hope that it goes ok, let us know how it goes.

glad you went sweet, hope the citalopram is a help to you think that is a pretty standard 1st med, thats what i was on...for a wk, made me too ill but the side effects seem very different for each person so dont let my bad experiences put you off :)
did the dr suggest any ways of loosing the weight?rather than just saying you are overweight?
whens your next appointment? if things dont improve make sure you tell them...altho the meds can take 4-6wks to kick in....but if they suggest referral to camhs or cmht then i would accept it. i HATE counselling and have tried a few times over 10 years and always found it complete utter waste of time...but i was referred to cmht and my care worker is fab and i really think she will help get me better :)
good luck
feel free to pm me anytime :) xx holly xx
