Thought Disorder

Taken from http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/23069111/ about paranoid schizophrenia (my diagnosis):

"Disordered thoughts. Thoughts may become jumbled or blocked."

This is happening to me big time. I find myself pausing every four words when I talk to someone because my thoughts get "stolen", as if someone just grabs them from me. I've been working for 90 minutes and haven't produced much because my thoughts are doing exactly that, becoming jumbled or blocked. I've been under more stress than normal because of University (Cambridge - I'm doing Natural Sciences which is apparently one of the hardest courses).

Even typing this thread is hard for me. I keep stopping and having to regain ownership of my thoughts.

Do you think I should tell my director of studies about this? Because it is making my work take twice as long and it is making concentration and having conversations very difficult.

PM me if you want a PDF copy of the ICD-10 or the Mental Health Act 1983/2007. I ALSO HAVE THE DSM-V BOOK and am a pharmacology student.

I have a visual impairment / neurological problems so I need people to type in clear text and no funny fonts. Also excuse any typos, my vision blocks things out.
I have autism and have problems communicating, PMs included.
Just becasue I type well doesn't mean I speak well. I am only part time verbal.

I would let someone at the University know. There is normally a 'special needs' liaison at Universities, I saw them as I have other 'needs' such as diabetes - they can talk through any help the University can provide and if you do not feel comfortable talking to your director of studies, they can offer to say something to them for you if need be. However, I think sitting down with them would be a good thing, as it shows you are willing to do the work and to be on the course - you are more than capable of it, whether a difficult course or not.

I hope you settle soon, and your thoughts come easier. Although I do not have the same diagnosis, I can understand disordered thoughts (although in my case, normally because there are another six of so pushing that one out of the way at that time...and vying for attention)

Thanks. I'll e-mail my tutor because he's generally a great person. I'm going to have a "needs assessment" next week at the Disability Resource Centre and I am going to have a mentor visit me every day for 15 minutes to help me out. I've also got a Disabled Student's Allowance and they might give me a free PDA to help with organisation and remembering things.

that sounds good :) My thoughts arent so much jumbled, i just have rubbish short term memory, so sometimes i'll be talking or trying to read and i just switch randomly from topic to topic, or just stop in the middle of something. Quite fustrating!
Your tutor sounds like a good bet, hope it goes ok

Thanks ems.

I e-mailed my tutor but I haven't actually told him yet. I just asked him if it would be appropiate to discuss "personal problems that are affecting my work and daily living" with him.

Literally, when I talk, I can't say more than a sentence without pausing to wait for permission to think and my thoughts to be reclaimed from the Higher Powers who seem to be in control of my thoughts.

ems and Eleutheros, thanks for your replies.
(ems - yeah, Huntercombe sucks)

I will wait for my tutor to reply to my e-mail later on today and I will reply to it and tell him all of this if he says its appropriate (I e-mailed to ask him if he was the right person to be talking to about this, but haven't actually told him what the problem is yet).

I'll get back to you guys when I've received the e-mail and I'll post a copy of my e-mail.

Thanks.

Good to hear, best of luck with the "needs assesment" they can be useful. Also Disabled Students Allowance is a good thing to apply for, it has caps depending on your needs, but it will cover things like a mentor or notetaker should you need them. The PDA is most likely also covered by it.

I agree with the others, printing out this thread and your link re your diagnosis could be helpful to take along with you. If nothing else, it can help provide a prompt should you get stalled at the time. *hugs*

Do let us know how it goes?

Roiben

Rageagainstthemachine, why do you know the place well? I'm interested.

I will update you about the "needs assessment" after I have it.

Dr. Dawson (my Tutor) e-mailed me back; I'm seeing him tomorrow evening.
