So I beat someone up, kind of.

Yep. A drunken Polish guy at my company's party. I'm a very easy going, peaceful person but he kept bothering my friends/coworkers and the owner of the bar didn't really do anything, so my boss & me just threw him out and since he kept wanting to go back in we blocked the door and gave him a good beating. He's still alive and well though and I still got my job. I'm just surprised at myself, don't mess with me, I guess.

I don't think the point is that they hurt someone. I think the point is that she stood up to a drunken, potentially violent, person when at other times she wouldn't have done that. She would have been like the rest of her work colleagues and done nothing about it but complain about the polish guy from the other side of the room.
for one minute there she did something that would have usually scared her. THAT, is the point. At least it's the point I found.

And i don't understand what his nationality has to do with anything. But that's probably just me? *shrugs*

I agree that his nationality has nothing to do with it. Also, did you really have any right to stop someone from going into the bar? Was there also a need to beat him up? You could have just said that it was a private party, but then if the bar hadn't sectioned off an area for you then he had every right to be there, whether or not he was annoying you or not.

Had you yourself been drinking too? You'd be suprised the things you can make yourself do when you are under the influence that you normally wouldn't.

People people, calm down. This was a company party, nobody knew this guy but we all assumed he was someone's partner. Later on it turned out another guy at work randomly invited his family and friends. We first informed the bar owner, they basically said that it was up to us to deal with it. Why they didn't have a bouncer, a guy who gets paid to get annoying people out, is beyond me. I'd assume that was what they'd do anyway. And we've been kind: someone like that probably would've been a lot nastier towards him. We managed to get him out of the door but he wanted to go in again. What we basically did was block the door and push him away rather forcefully. (note the title mentioning 'kind of') He started a lame attempt to hit us. We never started anything and just made sure he would enter a taxi and be gone from the premises. Yes we could've called the police but I doubt they would've come over and if they would, would they've been in time? This was a problem I wanted to deal with here & now (same went for my bosses). Besides now the guy's still free and police would've arrested him, probably. You guys are right that nationality doesn't really matter but I mentioned it anyway *shrugs* would've mentioned it too if he'd have been Dutch probably. Also no I had not been drinking, I always stay in control of myself.

I'm a peaceful, quiet, non violent person, also I'm not racist and I also have this feeling that the people who condemn me most in this thread would've done the same or even worse had the situation occured. I just have a good sense of morals and defending people who matter to me does mean something to me. I did the right thing, this I know.

Could have been handled better I think, calling the police would be the sensible option, not hurting someone is pretty much out of control of their actions.

But whatever.

Marte, could you explain why you were stopping a member of the public (annoying or not) from entering a public bar? If you had hired out the entire venue then it would be up to the bar staff/manager to remove the man, not a member of the party.

Not every bar has bouncers, especially smaller ones.

We hired the entire venue, it was a private party and the bar owners basically left it up to us, they literally said it was our responsiblity to get him out. And people don't realize that the police probably would've used more violence to solve this problem than we ever did.

It is the venue's responsibility to remove them, since it is their property. It could've been solved by saying to the man that you're sorry, but it's a private function and so the venue is closed to the public. Removing him without any explanation would lead to violence. The police wouldn't be allowed to use unnecessary force either, they'd talk to him first and explain the situation.

Again: don't you think we first tried to solve it nicely? We even let some other guy who spoke his language try to explain to him it wasn't a good idea to try to get his hands down some random woman's pants. By the time I warned the bar owner it'd gotten out of hand already and could not have been solved 'nicely' anymore. I'm not some insane bar room brawl loving butch chick, I say this over and over again but I feel that only two people in this whole thread got the point. And no I don't condone violence, at all, but you know whatever: think what you like about me, you should ask my gf and you'll hear that I'm the nicest and most gentle person she's ever met. I know that what I did was right.
