Triggering (SI) - why would yuo start!

You know when you meet someone who has just started to self harm and you just want to shake them! And go... NO!!!! DON'T GO THERE!!!! i met a young girl (12) a few days ago who has cut a few times and is convinced that it's okay... and i just wanted to grab her and shake her and go NO! It will destroy your life! >.< Why? why would you start!!!!

she's gettign help manda, as soon as i found out i told a worker. maybe she wont get stuck in it. why... why would you start

i see young kids... 10... 12... starting and I just don't want them to do it. I want to shout my story from the rooftops so they know where it leads...

Awareness would probably stop a lot of people starting.
I'd like to hope so anyway.
It's awful seeing people so young start.
I mean, it's not nice at any age but especially not really young like that.

i spoke about my life at a conference a littlw hile back and had so many questions and people saying thank you for helping us to understand a little... but i want schools to know! kids need to know that it's not good! it will steal your soul and when you get it backed it will be scarred terribly...

You're actually really brave, I could never do that!
We never learnt anything about it at school.
It wasn't til ALevel psychology when I was about 17 that it was touched on as a possible symptom of depression. That's it though.

I wish someone had cared enough and known when I first started however many years ago. There's a thread somewhere in serious or self injury discussion board called "The Cutting Warning" or similar. It rings so true. Maybe you could think about giving them a copy or paraphrasing to let them know how it could end up dominating their lives?

It's great that you have had such courage to talk about it, I wish someone had alerted me to what it was I was doing because when I first started, I didn't even know it was called anything.

i've sent the cutting label to some of the workers who've asked for my advice on how to deal with it. Hopefully they'll be able to help a little now....

i agree with everything you've said in this thread. but just remember you started too.
personally i dont know where i got the idea (i started before it became so well-known) and yes i probably would have stopped straight away if anyone like you had told me where i might end up with it. but we all started for some reason.

Its heart breaking for her and i'm glad she's getting help. But i'm sure none of us realised where the path of self harm would get us or how f*!ked up it could make us! Back then i'm not even sure i would have believed anyone or I would have thought i'd some control and thought - "yeah but i would never let it get bad and if it helps..."

at least shes getting help. hopefully the right kind. i never knew all those years ago how much of a struggle it would be to stop and then even when you do stop its still there in the back of your mind.
i think there should be more done in school etc in general to increase awareness of all mental health probs then there might not be such a stigma and young people might get help sooner.

It really saddens me when i see the kids at school who are SH, but i dont think anything would have mad a difference to me starting, i was so very depressed when i did that nothing mattered much anyway

I was told to stop (I was 13) as kids couldn't be depressed or have major problems. Knowledge is what is lacking in a lot of jobs and schools about SH. You are really brave to talk about as i Don't know if I could do that, though I do show my scars now.

I would never tell someone to stop... as soon as you tell a kid to stop... welllll it just makes it worse. the workers who are working with her now have done a lot of stuff with me on this so they know which line to take. Bascially they're explaining what it will become and the dangers and they're just offering her support. But still... it breaks my heart to see kids hurtin themselves :(
