Citalopram - advice please

Hey guys. I've been on 20mg of citalopram for 6 weeks now and I'm still waiting for it to 'kick in' or whatever. I don't expect miracles and understand that AD's take time to work and that a lot of patience and perseverance is required. But I'm starting to get a little frustrated. I know it's not difficult to take a pill once a day but when it just doesn't seem to help, it seems totally pointless, ya know? 6 weeks isn't a long time in the grand scheme of things, but surely they should be starting to take effect by now? All they seem to be doing in fact is making me feel sick and lowering my sex drive to virtually zero, mucho fun lol!

Does anyone here have any experience of taking citalopram and how long it takes to work etc? I'm seeing my GP on thursday and am going to ask her if I can have my dosage increased or perhaps swap onto something else. Or just come off the bloody things all together!

Any advice at all would be great.

Thank you

Cx

They don't make me feel sick but I would have to own up to that 'other' side effect of yours (the psych told me not to worry about it as it may be the depression, not the meds). I was on 20mg for a while and that didn't seem to do much so now it is 30mg and the jury is still out.

From what I understand it should be having some effect on you by now. It could just be that the dosage is wrong but it definitely well worth talking to your doctor.

I took Citalopram for....2 months? Something like that. I noticed it working pretty quickly, maybe within 2 weeks, but it also killed my sex drive, so I switched to a different med after the 2 months.

Well it breaks my heart to see you this way,
The beauty in life, where's it gone?
And somebody told me you were doing okay,
Somehow I guess they were wrong.

A few years ago i was on Citalopram for about 6 months....It was actually later found that i reacted badly to it and it was actually making me worse.
I had to stop it after several failed suicide attempts. I did notice it's affect (even though they were negative) pretty quickly, like maybe 2/4 weeks in. However, my best friend is on 50mg and she thinks the world fo the drug. She has been on it for about a year now.

Well, that's my experience with it. I dont know if it will help. Just make sure to be honest with your doc tomorrow!

I don't think I found it helpful at all, I had my dose increased once and then I moved on to a different medication. Six weeks is quite a while so I would have expected it to have started working by now. I hope your GP is able to help. Take care.

I put it down on paper and then the ghost does not ache so much.

To be honest, you've been on it six weeks already, if it still hasn't helped you after another two weeks then it probably wont. You can usually see a difference within 2-8 weeks of starting a new medication.

I was on citalopram and it did absolutely nothing.

Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…

i took citalopram for about 4weeks and for the majority of that i was just sick and dizzy, which made me feel a lot worse. i'd say your doing the right thing by going to talk to your dr hun, they might be able to put you onto something else that will help you. 6 weeks (as said above) is a long time to be waiting.

take care

Thank you all for the replies. It's good to know that I'm not the only one who thinks citalopram is a bit crap! I'll see what my GP says tomorrow, hopefully she'll agree to increase my dose or put me on an alternate drug. She did actually suggest putting me on 30mg about two weeks ago but then suddenly changed her mind. I was in a pretty bad state at the time though I guess that may have had something to do with it. Anyway, thank you again, will let you know how I get on tomorrow. Cx

Went to the docs today, I'm now on 30mg so I'll see if that makes any difference. If not she's going to put me on something else. Does anyone know if I'll get the yukky side effects from having the dosage increase?!

Anyway, thank you all for the advice.

i would think that this would vary from person to person but that there would still be a chance that you may.Why not give it a go for a bit and see maybe?

All I can say is that I was fine when my dose went up. Hopefully you will be the same.

It totally does very from person to person. I am the best I've ever been on citalopram. I hope the new dose does help. It took me to get to 30mg to make a real difference.

I find it makes my legs restless, which drives me mad!
I got up early today just because I was so fidgety.
Sex drive is zero. Luckily I'm single so it isn't too bothering just now.

I may ask for an increase too as it doesn't seem to work for me unless at 40mg + (I'm on 20mg at mo)

I want to kiss the bottom of the ocean before I burst through its surface into the sunlight, otherwise I will always be wondering about what was left unseen at the bottom

i'm tired of chasing my dreams.
i'm just gonna ask where they're going,
and hook up with them later.

I don't know weather I should go back to the doctors and and ask to be put onto something else or not. hang in there caz. I hope it starts to work for you soon hunny.xx

Like everyone said it varies from person to person I'm on 40mg and have been for 1yr before that i was only on 20mg. My GP and psych won't reduce it for as this is the only way it wirks. I'm lucky I don't have any of the side effects and it has made a real difference for me. I was on other AD'd which never worked. Be honest with your GP and if that particular drug doesn't work they'll probably chande.

Stick with it for the meantime as the extra dosage will take a while to kick in as well.

Good Luck
