Generalized Anxiety Disorder? Citalopram?
So I finally went to the health center at my college and I'm going to be in therapy for awhile and a doctor diagnosed me with generalized anxiety disorder and prescribed me citalopram (Celexa).
I know nothing about either. Can anyone give me any information? I'd especially like to hear from anyone who took/is taking citalopram or Celexa to treat generalized anxiety disorder...

yeh ive heard of it used for anxiety.
basically it is a ssri- which is seratonin selective receptor inhibitor,
there is something called seratonin which is a chemical that are body realises and it makes us happy(supposidly). throughout the day and night we have different levels of this chemical. there are little receptors that are responsible for re absorbing the seratonin.....as some of us require a bit more than seratonin to help us be happy. so basically this drug works by blocking the receptors for seratonin which means that the not as much seratonin is absorbed and there is more available to keep ur mood up.
hope this makes sense..... google is a good thing to search about it too :)

I don't take Citalopram for that disorder, I take it for depression with a bit of anxiety & what I can tell you is that it hasn't helped the depression much, but I am so much calmer & less anxious now! I hope it works for you, PM me if you like :)

I take 20MG of Citalopram at the moment and apart from tiredness don't really have any side effects from it.
I take it for specific anxiety disorder and depression as well. It is a Med which will work for Anxiety and Depression and won't increase anxiety first before starting to help with it as apposed to something like Fluoxetine which has potential to increase anxiety first before it starts to help with it.
I am a big believer that Meds only ever work along side therapy. I see Medication as a sort of plaster covering up the wound as a temporary measure but they won't fix the problem in full.
Take Care,
Sarah x

I have been taking it for anxiety and depression with no real side effects after the first week (apart from tiredness). As to how well it is working, for me the jury is still out but I guess I do feel a bit better than when I started (just not great yet).
Good luck with it.

I was on citalopram for a long time (about 7months) for depression and anxiety and then i was changed onto something else. I had no side effects and it worked wonders for me, i still struggled in evenings but then there were other factors which enhanced that. I generally found i felt ok as such nothign major but i was able to cope with daily living. I have just started it again this week so hopefully it'll work the same as before. Good luck, hope it works well for you.
