Triggering (OD) - Benadryl

I've taken 2 benadryl pills every night to help me sleep for the past couple years. 2 is the suggested dose on the bottle. But lately I've been having urges to OD on them.Today's urge was strong and came with the though "It would be so easy to kill myself if I gave in right now."

I'm a 20 year old girl who has no car, no job, and friends who are busy with their own lives of school and work...constantly. No one ever has time for me. And I get out of the house about once a week...if lucky, twice.

What is happening that you can't get out of the house? Have you talked to your doctor about what is going on with the benadryl?

Can you talk to your doctor or counselor about how you feel?

I'm sorry i'm not more help tonight. My PM box is always open.
hugs

In forgiving others, we are not exonerating them. They may not deserve exoneration. Rather, in forgiving others we are giving up our anger over the fact that what happened is not what "should" have happened or that our life is not the way it "should" have been.

Maybe the Benadryl in't the best way of getting to sleep in th evenings if you're wanting to OD on it. Have you tried a herbal substitute, such as valerian root? I know it sounds silly, but it really does work.

But I gues it's less the sleep than the underlying reasons why you're down that need tackling. If you're not getting out enough, maybe give yourself a reason to. Volunteering is a great way to make new friends and get out of the house. Like helping with a scout group or a youth club or whatever's around.

I agree with blondie, in that you probably need to see a doctor or counsellor about this and get some help. Your life is valuable, please don't end it.

I overdosed on Benadryl once. It was not a fun experience at all. I threw up a lot (the pills were coated hot pink, btw -- not fun to clean up, my stuffed animal is still stained even after being through the wash twice), made a complete idiot of myself because I apparently had no idea where I was or what I was doing, and completely failed a presentation the next day because it turns out that the half life is quite long when you take to much of it. I also discovered that the next morning my attempts at notes in class were actually just dots, but I couldn't quite tell at the time, which was actually quite terrifying. So the point is that I'd strongly recommend against ODing on Benadryl. And while it may seem like any easy way out, chances are you'll throw up most of it, and just have a very unpleasant experience.

That said... Benadryl's not really the issue here. I think it would be a really good idea for you to talk to a doctor or therapist about how you're feeling. You also need to get out of the house more. You can't just sit at home wishing someone would come and make you leave - you've got to take some initiative here. Feeling like that is really common in depression, and one of the best things you can do to counteract that is what psychologists call "behavioral activation," which just means getting up and doing things. Depending how much you're doing at home, that might mean starting with something as small as cleaning up a bit, or making yourself a meal, or it might mean something like finding some volunteer work to do, or if you're religious at all, it could mean getting more involved at Church/temple. I'm sure there are plenty of things you can get to by walking or taking the bus -- you just have to look for them a bit.

Thanks for the advice...I live in the middle of nowhere. So I can't walk anywhere or take a bus.

Benadryl (diphenhydramine) isn't a fun thing to OD on, as the last person said. It causes vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and lots of confusion. I took an OD of diphenhydramine once, just once, and ever since I have not been able to take them again, in any form at all. It took my stomach weeks to right itself again.

It can also cause liver damage.

if ur friends r really friends they wouldnt be too busy to hang with you especially if they really cared about u. maybe u should go out to somewhere that has a hobbie/interest for u and try and find ppl that shared ur interests

I also have bad experiences with Benadryl. I wouldn't recommend it.

The first time I had the no idea what was happening experience as described above and I definitely had a lot of hallucinations that I was 100% sure were actually happening. I did a lot of stupid things. I ended up in the hospital for 5 days on suicide watch before being placed in a mental hospital.
The second time I ended up throwing up a lot and just being terribly ill. As soon as I took them I realized I had made a big mistake but couldn't do anything to reverse it. I was paranoid that I had done some drastic harm to myself because I was in so much pain.

So, yeah it is pretty bad.
But as said above the main issue is finding other ways to entertain yourself. *hugs* Maybe find some good books to read or get a pet (like a hamster even) to help distract you?
I hope you find a way that makes you feel better.

I overdosed on this before. Not nice. My vision was blurry, I was feeling extremely dizzy, I couldn't walk properly, I felt so sick, I felt like I was going to black out or have a seizure because I was feeling SO weird, it's not nice, it's scary.

Please don't overdose on this, or anything else. Could you talk to a doctor or something to help you with this? Hugs hun x

Do not OD on benadryl. It is possibly one of the most i unpleasant experiences you will ever have. I was an abuser of pharmaceuticals for quite some time, the main ingredient in Benadryl is Diphenhydramine, which has extremely unpleasant side effects such as hallucinations, voices, severe sweating, shaking, terrible vomiting and such. It is not safe to take more than the recommended doses, I will not discuss actual miligram quantities but trust me its not something you would favor. Very few recreational pharm users try it more than a few times, if it doesn't permanently hurt you it will definately be some of the worst number of hours of your life. Please take me seriously. You can PM me if you please.
