Triggering (SI) - Support Groups

Does anyone go to a self-harm support group? I know there are groups around, I'd like to find out a little more about them and how they help because I am thinking about going to one.

The thing I'm interested in is that you can meet people in real life who self-harm so they won't be disgusted with what you are doing, and can help you if you have any urges.

I got an email from the head of a support group in my area, probably because my GP sent a letter to her (I don't really know, maybe it could of been somebody else). She said that if I would like to come along, I'd be more than welcome.

So I'm thinking about it, but I want to hear your experiences of support groups first (if you guys have any), since it'd be quite interesting.

That's great that there's a support group in your area. I searched for one awhile back, but couldn't find one in my area. I did find an online group that has been working out wonderfully for me. I think what's helped me the most is that a lot of things don't have to be said- obviously we're all in that group because of self harm, so you can ask a question like "What should I wear?" and everyone knows it's more than just a fashion question. Also, when someone shares an experience, I get the feeling that just about all of us have had something similar- whether it's about cutting too deep or trying to deal with the relationships that SI has complicated.

I have been going to a support group for several years and I love it, it's challenging but people really understand what you are going through, it can be really helpful even if you are shy at first.
Hope it goes well, just give it a try.

Go for hun, it could be really good. You don't have to go back if you don't like it

Yes i go to one, well i've not been for months, but yeh they're helpful i think, even if you are very shy,you get used to it,and you don't have to go every week, only if you feel comfortable.
:)
Go for it hun you have nothing to lose.

Thanks guys!

I'll email her back and ask for details of when and where they meet, and then I'll go along. Support groups sound quite good from what you've been saying. The support is what I want most.
