Triggering (SI) - Intervention - Triggering for anyone else?

Hello,

Normally I can watch this show without any problems. I even watched one about self injury they did about a year ago without a problem. But the one that aired last night about "Allison" was different. A part in the program got to me. They attempted an intervention and Allison said no, big surprise. So anyway they called the humane society to have her pets taken away. Well while the police were there they noticed that Allison had cuts on her arm and asked if they were self inflicted. As you can guess they jumped to suicide. Even though she told them otherwise. But she was upset about her pets being taken away so she said if they were taken she couldn't live without them, and they took that as a suicide threat. So they told her that she would have to go to the hospital for a psych hold. She refused and was slammed on the floor by the officers, cuffed and taken by forced to be let out 7 hours later. Guess she wasn't that suicidal. Anyway, it was pretty triggering for me because I have been down that road many time. Not with the pets part, but with police saying I am suicidal because of the cutting. I was just curious if anyone has seen the show found it triggering at all. Like I said though, I never had a problem with watching it, just this time it brought up alot of similar memories and made it triggering.

I have never watched that, but everyone that I know seems to link the SI to suicide. Even if we're not actually suicidal.

I need to have a talk with a friend about SI. She doesn't really understand I think, but I'm hopeful she talked to her father or something. Anyway, I hate these misconceptions because they make my job of talking to the people I care about harder!

I've never even heard of that show; however, I do find that many people like si and suicide, my husband being one of them.
How can we get that suicide stigma away from SI? They are so incredibly different.

Hello Everyone,

Sorry for not replying the last week. Been having a hard time dealing with the PTSD. Eleutheros, I do remember you. I have written to news papers, lawyers, patients rights advocators, govenors....you name it. No reply. The lawyers would not take the case because they are county hospitals doing the abuse and county hospitals have alot of high priced lawyers. On top of that, the charts are faulsified about what really happened making it out to be that I attacked them, not the other way around. Making them use such force needed, although leaving out things they are not supposed to do. I mean really, who are they going to believe right? So no charges were ever filed and they got away with it. All I can do about it is just live with what they did.

The only proof I have is what I said they did. And that's just not good enough. They need video tape, documents, a witness....something more than my words to back it up. Untill then, it will keep happening to others, not just me. Hell, even my therapist said she saw it happen, but could do nothing to stop it. She had to pretend it wasn't happening or be fired. Speak up or be homeless, can't say I blame her there.

What I don't understand about doing the "intervention"....Why send someone to a place they don't want to be when they are not ready to stop? They are not going to stop just because you threaten them. It's been proven in their show time after time. The ones who are not ready go because they are forced, then get out and go right back to it. But because they went, the family now has to keep their end of the bargan, they went after all. There was nothing that said, Go and get clean and stay clean. It's basically go or else. And if the or else is bad enough they go and then if they are ready to stop they stop, if not they go back to it when they go back home. Waste of money if you ask me. I don't know, maybe others here see it differently. But that's my two cents on the matter. If someone did it to me, I would say no and walk out. I won't be forced into anything. Just the way I am.

I just saw the episode, and I could definitely see how it could be triggering. I guess the part of it I most identified with was she was trying to be respectful of the police and yet still respect her own limits- and when her limits were not respected, drastic action was taken. I know that sense of being trapped, where you either go to the psych ward "voluntarily" or with the police, and there's no way out. Like others have said before, I hate how people automatically think of suicide when they see scars/cuts.

Who can attest that when they're at their best
Oh their worst is still crouching close behind
It's coming to peace with the darkness in me
That allows the true light to shine inside
