Did anyone else see on the news that said that dowloading music illegally was banned and if anyone did it they'd get a warning letter and be watched and if they repeatdly did it after the letter was send their internet would be cut off and you wouldn't be allowed it back? And they are doing this because companies in the music industry (record labels etc) are losing money because less people are buying the music and illegally downloading it for free anyway.
Just wander peoples thoughts.

they will find a way but good on them for at least trying to, personally yes I do it though I can't remember the last time I did it, but I am now housemates with someone who wants to get into the music industry and she hates it that people do it, the money is a real reason hey, like how is she going to keep making money if people just d/l for free? Really, i don't mind if its made illegal, so you pay abit more money? It doesn't bother me but then again I'm not a real big music fan anyways.. but like Porcelain said, people will find a way out of it..
It has always been illegal! You are breaking the copyright of the music, especially if you share your copy. You can get songs on iTunes for 79p I think it is. Just pay the money. That way at least you are getting a good quality one instead of something that has been taken off the radio (complete with random jingles), has dodgy sound (really loud or really quiet) or just doesn't work.
And they are doing this because companies in the music industry (record labels etc) are losing money
(edit) They're not losing money, they're just earning less profits. (edit) I like to see them try and stop everyone downloading. Just like they say they're trying to cut down on crime...

You can download excellent copies for free - I've never heard of anyone whose downloaded a copy that was "taped from the radio". I agree totally with Interstella 5555. Record companies are still making plenty of money - the industry is not in trouble. They're just sour because they're making less profit from sales. But it's ok they've still got plenty of ways to make cash! Do you know how much mark up itunes put on their 79p singles? If you can get superb quality music for free then why not. Music, surely, is an art not a business.

If you want to hear something that has obviously been taken from the radio then go to [a music download place] and download the top selection of either Rihanna's "Take a Bow" or Chris Brown's "With You".
Painting is an art and not a business but I'm sure a painter would still rather get some money for their work instead of handing it out for free.
Also, petrol has an incredibly high mark up in the form of taxes and other things. You would think of stealing petrol, would you? In fact, everything that gets sold has some form of mark up, it's how they make money to survive.

Reason: Please refrain from posting names of where you can download music illegally
owh, i hate radio versions! but it's pretty easy to find good quality ones anyway.
&whateverrrrrr. if i didn't download music my music taste would probably be the size of a radio playlist, and that would suck.
I don't know what I think of this, at first it horrifies me a little...But then hey it's fair enough, we are stealing by downloading illegally (which it always has been so therefore technically it always has been banned...)
My personal views are I'll pay money to buy albums from bands I like because I think they deserve my money but I do illegally download from artists I don't really care about...
I tend to illegally download alot of music I use for dance, I don't want to pay for something I'll dance to once... :(
I'm not sure how they're going to stop people...But hey it probably needs to be done...And hey gig and festival prices are only gonna get higher if we don't start paying for music
just because you've forgotten doesn't mean you're forgiven
Okay so it has always been illegal, but when it's £10 an album and you can get it for free for the same quality, what are people gonna choose?
And at the end of the day, musicians and record labels *can* reduce the price of albums and reduce their profit, they've already got millions of £'s !
I like what McFly did, give it out free in a Newspaper, okay so you had to pay £2 for the Newspaper, but it was affordable ! Someone needs to kick some sense into these people. They have too much money already !
Sorry, end of rant !

i think the price of some cds are terrible like i saw a cd the other day and it was £15 but why pay that when you can get the same cd for free on the net also if they do ban down loading im sure people will find a way around it
lke one perosn buy the cd then just make copies of it as you can get internet software that clears the copy right on the cd and dvds
yeah i heard about this.
bt were saying if they prove youre downloading they'll slow your speed down so it takes longer to download.
i thinks its pointless.
if downloading was causing so many problems for bands and stuff-theyd all be lacking money-which theyre not......
i couldnt give a rtas ass personally.
ive always downloaded my stuff.....even before broadband came along.
And hey gig and festival prices are only gonna get higher if we don't start paying for music
Please explain how. I know Glasto was barely making money last year but that was because of Eavis forgetting his medication and going loopy.

Just download something overnight then. Electricity is cheaper at night too.
Honestly all this 'the industry is in trouble'. It's not. It's never been. It's just evolutionized. The death of the single (TOTP RIP) hasn't really effected anyone and albums within the right genre sell just as fast as the past.
I think it's stupid as it's been going on for so long and now all of a sudden your internet is going to get cut off if you download something?
What about bands who offer free downloads of their music?
I don't think it's as much music that's worried about loosing out on money, but also films and games as well.
All sorts can be downloaded on the internet now, the possibilities are endless! Why doesn't Limewire get shut down for a start? As that's one of the biggest downloaders around!
Also another point I was thinking, I know some people who "steal" their neighbours internet, what will happen if they do illegal downloading? Their neighbour will be the ones missing out and they can just find someone else to steal there internet from.
I think the internet companies are being stupid! The amount of people that download illegally... Pfft that's going to be losing them a LOT of customers...
I don't download so it doesn't bother me.
Its just not right to download illegally.
If you like the music enough then pay for it and support whoever it is.

Bands who offer free downloads are fine because that will be legal. You'll be noticed by how much you are downloading, most probably at peak times. Most bands don't offer free downloads so you wouldn't be doing it that much. Even if you were downloading loads off of iTunes you'd still be OK.
[the music download place] itself is perfectly legal, just the stuff passing through it tends not to be. I think people have tried to shut it down before but since it's not doing anything wrong they can't. And even if it did get shutdown there are others which would come to the forefront.
Stealing your neighbour's internet is also illegal, but rarely gets prosecuted. It would be proven by your computer probably.

Reason: see above/last edited post
I remember the days when i could get a spice girl's cassette for 99p from woolworths.
Now, it's what? £3.99? £4.99? For a single?
I stopped buying music many years ago. I think the last time i got a music album was Christmas 2005.
These days you have to pay to BREATHE. Not quite litrali of course. But, mortgages, rent, tax, water rates, gas & eletric..everything costs alot of money.
Albums cost between £12-15/16 each time.
I tend to like the "Now" albums, but if i was to buy every single one i'd be bankrupt.
I see nothing wrong with downloading. I don't download, however my partner does. If i want a game, or an album (although the past few years i tend to stick on the music channel or go on youtube..or another music site) he'll get it for me.
I see nothing wrong with downloading, so long as people don't go "too far" and start selling it. That's pure cheeky.
If they want us to buy there albums/singles, lower the prices.
I know i can't afford to buy all the cd's i'd like.
I don't personally download that much music. anymore due to quality. Even if you buy officially, you won't get the 16 bit 44.1kHz wavs that you get from CD's. Mp3's are a compressed format and introduce bit crushing.
Radio versions sound terrible because they have been compressed to hell - this is the act of removing dynamics and making quiet bits louder and more uniform - thus being able to push songs more efficiently through small radio speakers.
And obviously so it will sound crap and no one will steal it.
As for the record companies. Totally agree, they make enough money by screwing people over.
This won't last, they tried to ban tape, cd's, DAT (Digital Audio Tape, CD's predocessor) and in the end introduced a "royalty tax" to any recording medium such as blank tapes and recorders, to prevent profit loss.
To be honest, I think it's the kick in the bollocks that the record companies need, greedy ****ers.
