A & E (quick answers appreciated)

okay, the bf wants to take me to a and e today cos im apparently getting worse and im a danger.

what happens when you go? I really dont want to go and im scared of if they take me in or tell me to piss off home.

Ok, basically you'll be assessed by the duty psych. They'll ask you much the same questions that you'd be asked at any first mental health appointment- a bit about you, your background, your family, medical history etc. The course of action will really depend on
1. The risk assessment of you. Do they think that the risk you present with can be managed sufficiently in the community or does it require a period in hospital?
2. Whether and what support you are recieving from the community team if indeed you already have some kind of intervention arranged.

They will be looking to manage your risk in a way which is in your best interests while taking you views into account. It may be that they contact the Home Treatment team and ask them to give you support. They may review the medication you are on or look at ways of getting you more support in the community. Or you could be admitted.

I really think if your boyfriend is worried and if you are unsafe then going to the hospital would be advisable. What it indicates to them is that one way or another you are not getting enough/any/the right sort of support that you need right now and so it will give them the opportunity to make changes to this so that you recieve more of the help that you need.

Doctors do not like admitting people if they can help it. There is an increasing emphasis on community care- the long and short of it probably is that the NHS is finacillay screwed and it is a lot more expensive for them to keep someone in a psych hospital than to treat them in the community I would imagine! Also it benefits the person more in many cases- after all, no one likes going into hospital, be that psych or otherwise.

It might help if you were able to have some suggestions to hand of ways you felt they could help keep you safer in the community. The psychiatrist will take your opinions on board and the fact that you are self presenting prior to acting on any impulses to harm yourself will certainly go in your favour because it shows you have the capacit to recognise these feelings and say "I want help and support to stop them before they get out of control and someone has to go against my wishes". But Im afraid no one can rule out the possibility of your being admitted.
