Wound Care - Painful wound.

Ok, I work in a DIY store so i've got to cut open boxes and wrappings for whatever i'm putting out, so we've always got to carry a stanley knife (And no, i'd never, ever cut myself intentionally with that thing, my arm would probably fall off it's so dirty lol!)

But yea, so i was cutting some boxes up to recycle, and i went too far through the box (Very clumsy :( Lol) and cut pretty deep into my thumb, right above the nail on the very top, it started bleeding quite heavily belive it or not, so i applied pressure, washed it (Which just started the bleeding again) then dryed it the best i could, then put a plaster over it, it fell off a few minutes later, but it stopped bleeding, it is still gaping, but not bleeding.

I bumped into a trolley which started it bleeding again so i did the above again, and it hurts like bloody mad, honestly, like a sharp stabbing pain all around my thumb, i'd go to the doctor, but it's just a thumb wound lmao, about 2 inches in length, so i'd look like a fool, i'm just wondering if there's anything i can do to it to stop it from hurting lol, and why it's still gaping, but not bleeding, and why it's so damn painful, being a self harmer you'd think i was used to getting cut, but this hurt more then any cuts i've ever had lmao.

I've never, ever seen that as a "Tool" lmao, i can get my hands on as many new blades as i want, but they're a work tool to me, not a SH tool, so i've never really been tempted.

If a wound is gapping esspecally if made with a dirty tool, then you should go to your local walk in center of hospital. Because the joint moves a lot, it is difficult to keep the wound closed. You may require stitches in order to help it heal better.

The sooner you go, the better chance you have of getting the correct treatment for it.

Ok, i'l go soon, it seems to be forming a crust of dry blood in the gap, not a scab, but it seems open still, does it need to be closed for it to heal? What would happen if it tryed to heal while open?

When I don't get stitches for a cut that's gaping enough for stitches and forms a scab, it takes awhile (i've had one healing for about 2 weeks) the scab keeps falling off and trying to heal again. Being on your thumb, theres a greater chance of infection. Stitches would keep it closed from infection and have a faster healing time. So, stitches would be best. Otherwise keep it covered and disinfected well.
