Triggering (Suicide) - Venlafaxine

Hi, I need advice... i have recently had my meds changed and I am having problems. The meds have been changed as my BPD and PMDD symptoms are severe and were not being helped. I have been on venlafaxine for a week now, and have gone from low to having obssessive suicidal(planning) thoughts for hour on end. I have no drive or enthusiasm for anything, all I want to do is lay still, silently, and think. I am used to SI thoughts and actions(i call that 'surviving') but I havn't been suicidal for years, and I havn't even been this apathetic about my existence. Could it be a side effect? will I always be like this? I can't stand this, but if I stop the tablets I'll never know if they would have helped me, as nothing else does.

Starting up and dosage changes of this medication can have those effects. I had similar when I started to come off it, as well as when I had my dose increased mid way.
You need to speak with your doctor about what's happening as soon as possible.

It is a relief to hear that someone understands, and to know what is causing it. I know I should see my doctor but I don't know what they can do about this. I will make an appt tommorow, at the moment I am going from minute to minute and trying to be around people, even though that pains me. Thanks hun

I was only on it for a month at 37.5mg one in the morning and one at night. At the same time my sh got really bad again and my suicidal plans became quite advanced there were also family issues at the same time so its hard to know which was making me worse. Whilst these side effects did occur i found i was able to handle things better on them so speak to your doctor asap about it and see what they recommend. Sorry im not much help, i just wanted you to know your not alone and they may ease up soon.

Hun you wont always be like this, it could just take time for the tablets to kick in.

They might be able to give you a different medication, and/or up the level of support you have as you try it out.

Hi, I am going to see the doctor at 4pm today, hopefully some good will come of it as I feel very low. The psychiatrist thought this would be a med that would help my impulse control, as well as having less side effects than amitriptyline. He did warn me I may get worse before I got better, but I never expected this!!!

Hi, I went to see the doctor and encountered a very helpful medical student, I hope i've helped her studies!!!I did get to see my doc too, he is trying to get me an urgent psych appointment (I tried to ring them earlier to no avail) and is going to phone me tommorow. They may, or may not get the crisis team involved. I know there's not much that can change my thought processes, i've been trying to for years, but at least maybe there could be some support out there, and in here. Thank you xx
