Well, not to worry you but I was on fluoxetine hydrochloride for 3 weeks recently, and it made the urges to self-harm a hell of a lot stronger. This post is not to worry you at all, because people's experiences differ, but I had a really bad time on it.

Don't worry about it, yeah? You'll be ok xx

I've been on fluoxetine for almost 2 years and it helped tremendously. I love it. You may not have the same experience, but everyone I know that's on it loves it. Good Luck!

I've been on it for nearly a month now.
I've found it's just made my urges and moods worse and it makes me incredibly tired but I'll give it another while before I give up on it. Hope it helps for you.

I've been on it, off it and back on it now! It does wonders for my anxiety, and not so much for depression but it's a circle for me so I am glad to be back on it.
As for side effects, I have felt a little dodgy - a bit sick & I get hot flushes etc, and some extra agitation to normal but in my experience it passes.
As Trace said, you may have completely different effects than the rest of us. xxx

I've been on it for about a year and a half, it made me a bit worse after a few weeks but then it got better as they hiked up the dosage. I got very slight nausea and dryness of the mouth for the first few days (and then whenever they put up the dose) but that was both very slight and temporary so all-in-all it's been brilliant.

After about 6 weeks it starts to settle down, so give it time to get into your system.

Take care x

This is my 4th time on prozac, silly doctors think I'm fine take me off it and then it all goes horribly wrong. It takes 6weeks for you to get the full affects and usually the first 2weeks are the hardest. it made me have worse SI thoughts and suicidal thoughts but I was prepared for that after the 1st time of going through it. My dosage was increased a week ago as I was worried that I'd slip up as I've been struggling. I didn't think increasing the dosage would make me worse for 2weeks, but it seems that it has but i'm going to stick with it as I believe I'll be much better soon. Just stick with it for a while and know that you may have increased urges, just be ready for them. I don't think I would've survived the past 10years without prozac!

Im currently on fluoxitine too. I got some of the side effects you're talking about, but they went away pretty quickly. Now ive only been on them for a month or so, so I havent felt any improvement yet. Ive just felt really weird, and very upset at times.

I was on citalopram and hated it, it gave me vicious, vivid nightmares and made me really ill. I got switch to fluxetine and haven't had any negative side effects.

The only thing I would advise is not to drink alcohol with them cuz it makes me have fits and forget whole periods of time. Alocohol doesn't usually have that effect on me but since I started taking fluxetine I've decided that being tee toatl is a good idea.....easier said than done :S

Hope i helped, all you can do is try them and hope for the best as people have different reactions

I've been on Fluoxetine for just over a year. I found it to be innaffective at a low dose but whn the dose was raised to 60mg it started to kick in and has definitely made things alot easier t deal with. I didn't get any side effects either, except for a few periods after each increase when i'd have manic laughing episodes but to be honest they wern't that unpleasant.
Give it a go, it might work.

Hey

As you can see, different people have different reactions to meds. I was on Fluoxetine for a month and noticed no different (had a couple of ODs during that time but still do on other ADs). I didn't notice any side effects but I had lost weight - perhaps due to other factors. The best advice, although boring, is to tell your dr if you notice anything that is troubling you.

I hope you find something that works.

Take care!

Unless the side-effects are debilitating, I wouldn't come off it just yet.
Most Dr's recommend sticking it out for 3 months until changing meds.
When I was on Fluoxetine my side-effects lasted about 2 - 2 and a half months. Although, I wasn't feeling sick.
Your body will need to get used to being on medication.
Don't be disheartened - stick it out.
It always gets worse before it gets better. =]

just thought i would give you a little update,on 13th day of taking fluoxetine

i finally stop feeling sick :) yahooo. overheat very easily and am still dizzy and sick when this happens. not enjoying the excess sweating but its livable. altho still feeling crappy ever now and again i generally feel like im doing a bit better, this maybe cos ive been off work for about 4 weeks so havent had any work stress or had to get up at any ridiculous hours to go to work.... but i think it is a positive step. havent sh'd for 3wks either.
got another gp appt on fri to check how im going, supposed to go back to work on monday but not sure im ready (also my friend and her twins are back from their hol on sunday so would like to meet up with them next wk) but im a bit scared of asking the dr for more time off. i dont know why cos work are fine with it hmmmm we'l c what happens!!!

hiya hun, i got put on citalopram about 3months ago, even tho for under 18s its high suicide risk. after 2months i took an overdose, ended up in hospital, now im a fluxotine (sory cant spell) my insomnias got alot worse as has my s/h yet i find if i take them in the morning with food and drink i dont feel sick, as i used to dry swalow them. if the side effects persist speak to your gp again, like others have said i dont recommend alcholo as i tend to black out. but overal its the better anti-depressant ive been on, as my sui thoughts are alot less to when i was on citalopram, yet tell your gp if you get worse, hope they work alright for you *hug* beth x
