Does working help relieve depression?

I'm just watching loose woman and they were just discussing whether wotking helps relieve Depression.

So are those who work really happier?

I believe that working helps me stop thinking and provides a distration as much as I dislike it.

So what are your thoughts?

Syrup.

I personally think that, to a certain extent it can help. It means you have structure to your day and something to focus on.

However, it can also be really detrimental, and some people just can't cope with working.

Basically, IMHO, structure = good; working = can be bad can be good.

I'd say yes. In most cases.
I'd say more, but i've gotta get back to work.

Yeah, it's not the work itself - it's the structure.
If there's no 'point' to your day, it makes you more depressed. Simple.

How far can you send emotions?

It gives me a feeling of connectedness with others. It gives me a safe space to be. It helps lift me up on 'bad days'.

Work, though, are really great about accommodating my illness, and making adjustments that help me cope better. Without that, I would be stuck.

Of course, you need to be in the 'right' job. Teaching just re-traumatised me and made me more ill. But that's a whole other story...

Work at the moment is my 'safe' place even though I hate my job. I find that hard to understand sometimes.

For me doing my college work does sometimes help me feel better as I have to concentrate, but half the time I can't concetrate if I feel under the weather.

I don't think it does. My dad has really bad depression and PTSD and they told him that if he is off work for 1 more day then they will have to take action...bear in mind the stress disorder caused a heart attack. and apparently if he has been off work more than 4 weeks they are legally allowed to stop his pay or make him work for £76 a week which is WAY less than he gets now. He shall be leaving on the 26th of June.
So, in my opinion, unless you are in the correct job, it worsens it!

I think it really depends on the person and on the job. For me personally, the stress of working tends to make my depression worse. But I can see how the structure can help some people too. And of course, some jobs are more stressful than others, some jobs would be more difficult to do with depression, etc.

It depends on the job and your co-workers I think. I didn't enjoy my last job because I didn't get on with certain people. I also had very bad anxiety at the time and worried about going to work constantly which made me start to do counting and self harm rituals. I have really enjoyed my voluntary work though. I think that work can help you feel more 'normal' and as has been said, can help you to focus on something other than how you are feeling.

I think it depends on your job, and also how much you enjoy your job. If you don't like where you work then it's not going to make you happy, but if you do then obviously it will. I think it's more that work is a distraction, you have to focus on something else.

Dramatic

This is a difficult one..

I've worked since i was 15 years old, i've never gone without having a job - until now.
I've been "unemployed" since November. I actually left my last long term job, for a new supervisor position at a new shop which was opening up quite close to me. Within 3 weeks, they "let me go" because they felt i wasn't "suitable" for the job. This was because of my depression - which was mentioned in both my application form, and was explained during the interview. I've since recieved money from the company for unfair dismissal.

Despite suffering from agrophobia (not being able to leave the house), i do find myself somedays very frustrated, like others have said - it's about the structure/routine when you have a job, i currently don't have that.

I am "unfit" to work, and having discussed things with the doctor not so long ago, he said he felt, right now, work would be completely unrealistic for me. This is because of my current depression and my anxiety.

Serving one customer - that's fine. But if there's more than one in a queue - i will have a severe panic attack.

I know when i'm ready i'll go back to work, but i know despite really wanting a job - it wouldn't be realistic for me right now.

For others who have depression, as i have a few friends with depression, they are fine to work. I think it all depends on the individual circumstances/situations.

I found work a reason to get up in the morning so I agree that structure can be great, but as everyone else said if you can not handle the stress of your job if can be even more depressing. I was taken off work due to not being able to cope.

Work is a real healing process for me. I love where I work. But yeah I do think it depends on the job/co workers etc xxx

I find work very difficult and I would love to be able to cope with working but it makes me a lot worse at the end of the day. I don't just suffer with depression though, I think it's the anxiety that makes it harder because that obviously drains people.
I do do volunteering and recently started an open university course because I definately think structure and having something to do helps with depression.
It's probably just a case of finding the right thing to help you

It can provide a distraction.
Also when it's something you actually enjoy doing, that can help.
the satisfaction of knowing it's a job well done does release endorphins into the body, which in turn cheer you up.

I'd say working can relieve depression but only if it's a job you actually enjoy doing. if it's a job you hate all you do is wallow in your misery.

I only work at the weekends (at college during the week) but I find it helps me. It gives me something to do and gives me structure.

My mum always told me that if I ever feel down to do something constructive, and as much as I argued over it for me it really did work.

I think working through the day made me appreciate my time off more and it gave me something to look forward to, plus having a nice wad of cash ain't to shabby either.

Although at school and college didn't help my depression at all, and that's why I'm better working than studying, but I'm pretty unsure about why its like that for me.

Oh and another thing that worked wonders was the gym, I know its a well known thing that exercise boosts the mood but I really argued against that until it worked.

I hate working, absolutely hate it. Then again I absolutely hate doing nothing all day, though tbh working makes me worse than not working cos as least if I didnt do anything all day I could drink, which wasnt very good for me but well it helped. Now all I want to do is smash my head into a wall so I dont have to go to work. I mean its a nice place, people are nice, jobs easyish, but well no I just can't stand doing too much for too long as I start to go a bit mental, so having a full time job really isn't smart of me.
