The HTT doctor sent a letter to Cambridge and UCL (the two universities I put down as my choices) about my Asperger' syndrome and the schizophrenia....arrgh I feel like there could be consequences to this.
My Mum's friend told me recently that they could refuse me a place on the basis of this.
What are the implications of this? I only got to see the letter after it had been sent. Sh*t.
PM me if you want a PDF copy of the ICD-10or the Mental Health Act 1983/2007. I ALSO HAVE THE DSM-V BOOK and am a pharmacology student.
I have a visual impairment / neurological problems so I need people to type in clear text and no funny fonts. Also excuse any typos, my vision blocks things out.
I have autism and have problems communicating, PMs included.
Just becasue I type well doesn't mean I speak well. I am only part time verbal.
Thanks. I am sorry I panicked. The letter was sent via my school so I suppose that if the school agreed with it, it must be ok.
It wasn't too detailed, but it did mention my hospital admissions and the recent happenings.
I just feel like it hangs on me like a heavy sign: "I am mad."

cambridge has LOADS of people who are on the autistic spectrum so i wouldnt worry about that and as crazyrabbitlady said- to turn you away on the basis of your schizophrenia would be discrimination. cambridge has quite a lot of student support in terms of counselling etc.
good luck
take care
They won't be allowed to discriminate against you based on the information, it's only been sent to them so that they can put procedures in place to help you if necessary. Don't worry about it.
ps. shouldn't you have already got your offers back from the universities you applied to? Once they've made you an offer they can't go back on that.
This may be a silly question, but are both of those Unis public Unis? Or private? Because in the US at least private Unis can discriminate based on anything that isn't against the law (like it's illegal to discriminate due to gender, race, etc)
Well it breaks my heart to see you this way,
The beauty in life, where's it gone?
And somebody told me you were doing okay,
Somehow I guess they were wrong.
There isn't the difference between private and public universities in the UK. Everyone has to pay to go.
I am at a uni in Birmingham, and they provide mentoring support for new students who may have had mental health problems either in the past or currently.
I won't worry about it as such, I think it is so that your academic support tutors/head or subject area can make sure that you are supported to the best you can be.
I think that it will be ok as the head of sixth form sent it off; if she thought it was ok to send it off, then perhaps I'm overreacting.
My Mother puts it into my head that my illness is something that should be kept secret and that I should be ashamed of. She even calls me "psycho" and "schizo" but I won't go into that...
Now my Mother wants to see the letter that they've sent off and she will blow up when she sees it and she will curse and mock me for days on end...
I talked to the head of sixth form about it and she said that Cambridge has excellent counselling/support schemes.
You have all helped me calm down, thank you.

Sadly my Mother is hugely socially intelligent. She can see through anything I try to hide from her. She's going to call the head of sixth form so that she can get it. Oh well. I had better prepare for name-calling and derision.

Thats really wrong of her to say that sort of thing to you. I hope you are alright and congrats on your uni offers :) As everyone else has said, Cambridge has a reputation for a good support service and my friend at UCL said they were excellent when he had mental health problems.
Thank you for the support. My Mother is not a very understanding person and I don't think she ever knew mental health problems exist until I got diagnosed.

yeah in the US, it's completely illegal for them to discriminate on the basis of schizophrenia or Asperger's. but what i don't understand is... why was this letter sent to them in the first place? it'd be so easy for them to discriminate and then just say it was because of something else. (I'm pretty sure that's happened to me in employment) i suppose if you need disability services (as I get from my university), but i didn't do that until after i'd been accepted into the university. i hope your mother becomes more understanding, honestly if i were in your place, i'd try to explain to her what mental illness is, and how you don't care for her treating you like that... if she refuses, I would really think of moving out. that kind of treatment can't be beneficial to your health.
My head of sixth form insisted that she sent it. Apparently New Hall college in Cambridge Uni are "really understanding and helpful towards these matters and will do what they can to help". This is from my formteacher who himself went to Cambridge.
If I go to uni (my a-level results...*shivers*) I will be living in halls of residence, so I will be away from my Mother at term time at least.
Thanks.
I've already been accepted into Cambridge and UCL.
