Medical notes?
Hi everyone,
Sorry if this in the wrong section
But i was just wondering if anyone knew if GPs HAD to put on your medical notes that you have self harmed?
I've stopped for 2 years now but unfortunately my scars are quite obvious and i dont think i can hide this from my doctor.
Also, if they are put on your notes who are they accessible to? I want to read medicine at university and really dont want university occupational health reading all about that
Thanks!

I know self-harm is on my medical notes but that could be because I was referred to a mental health team for it.
Even so, if it was on your notes, it can't stop you from doing anything. As far as I'm aware, as long as you are mentally stable at the time in question there is no reason for your past medical history - especially with you having stopped for so long - to make an impact.
Sorry that I can't be much help; PM if you need.

when i was 16 my sh got put on my med notes cos my mum phoned them to ask advice after the school phoned her. ive never let on since (im 24)
however i did a medical degree (podiatry-so just foot specialist) and they ask on the occupational health questionaire whether you sh, cos it was on my records i thought i would have to write it down (as far as im aware tho the uni has no right to look at your med notes) i then had interview type thing with the doctor and as long as i said i had gone 2 yrs they were happy for me to continue (admittidely i lied, but at this point i only sh'd cos of my mum and i was leaving home).
i have now worked for the nhs for 3 yrs now and never had any problem getting a job, again occupational health questionaire asked it but i just omitted it from the form as if go from the dr's notes the last time i had done it was 16 so that would have been 5 yrs previous.
my managers found out this year and didnt put my job at risk at all so i really wouldnt worry about it. you've done great going 2 yrs, dont let it hold you back xx

I've worked for the NHS for three years. My managers knew about my previous mental health issues and SI from the start and its never been a problem, even though I work in mental health, and it hasn't stopped from training as a nurse.
The only thing I would say is that at some point someone will find out. Hospitals are terrible places for gossip and I found it easier that lots of people already knew. There was a horrid woman who decided she would s***stir and try and run me out of the hospital by telling everyone I used to SH. The joke was on her though, it got back to me and I just said, "yeah, so what?" as did most of the people who knew me.
Its very difficult to gossip about something that is already common knowledge and that I am being open about, so she stopped - and looked very stupid and a bit of a bitch as a result.

I work for the NHS and occy health are fine so long as you are honest and talk with them.
i took an OD 2 weeks ago and was allowed to return to work by psych liason and occy health. The funny irony is that i work in pharmacy.

Hey,
Yeah I would agree with what has been said! I think too that you have the right to look at your notes and see what is in them (unless dr can give good reason as to why not) also any occupational health may only want a report from your dr and you can ask to see a copy of that as well!
Am not going to go any further than this though as it would be beyond my knowledge and I would be only guessing
Best Wishes,
Craig
