I once said to my Social worker that you can cut safely and she said she didn't think that was possible. I told my coach that it's possible. He said that it's pretty much an oxymoron. But it is possible. I mean you can cut "safely" or "dangerously" depending on how/where you do it.
What are your opinions?

I don't know, because I think it can be possible. But there are lots of 'if's' to it. I think you have to be in control. I know that might sound a bit like wtf. But if you can limit yourself, then I think it can work. If you take care of your cuts/burns, then that's being safer than if you don't. I think it's possible to cut safer rather than safe.

If you don't make yourself bleed, then i think that's safe. I just scrach myself, so i don't leave scars, or have people notice. that's my thoughts on it.
i think def possible, although-i think the main way to make cutting safe is not actually anything to do with the cutting...... i think making sure you use something that is a clean as poss, ideally only using the "tool" once then making sure you clean your wound and put a sterile dressing on after.
i was reading an article once that some hospitals were consider a "safe haven" type thing for sh-ers to get tools, eg sterile packed blades etc, like in drug clinics where they go to get sterile needles from. was very interesting but majorly controversial to lot of people. i think i was very good idea, also makes me as a sh not feel so ashamed cos its like someone understands a bit better.

this pic is so i can always remember jen who was my l'il sock monkey friend who has left ryl and i miss her!!!
i think cutting genually isnt safe but there are safer ways like not doing it deep and stuff but really the only time you can be safe about it is when your looking after it i guess because if you dont look after them you can get infected and then thats bad.
but yeh i do understand what you mean i always say i cut safe.
It's never 100% safe. Even if it's not even deep enough to bleed, you're still weakening your first immune defense (i.e. your skin) in that spot, making the chances of pathogen entering your body ever so slightly higher. But it's a very low risk. I think that making very shallow, controlled cuts every day probably presents less medical risk than, say, consuming alcohol every day (where you'll eventually end up with liver damage, whereas your skin can generally heal from minor injuries more or less indefinitely without serious harm).
There's of course a huge amount of variation in how dangerous cutting is, depending on the severity of the cuts. At the most extreme end, there can be an immediate danger of death or serious injury from blood loss. At the other extreme, the risk might be comparable to the risk of serious complications from a paper cut, or even a minor scratch. In between there's a varying risk of infection depending both on how deep the cuts are, and also how they were made and how clean they're kept. There can also be a risk of harm from blood loss that's not life threatening, such as an elevated risk of anemia, with cuts that are deeper but somewhat less extreme.
So yeah, it's a lot like sex really - it can never be 100% safe, but there's a lot you can do to make it safer that can make a huge difference to how risky it is.

You guys all make good points. There is definitly a safer way of doing it.

I agree with dancingirl, there are ways to limit the danger, clean tool, shallow cuts, antiseptic, etc, but even scratches and red marks are still causing some damage, so there is some danger.

I know. Obviously it's not a perticularily safe thing to do. There are a million things that can go wrong with even a shallow cut, but what I was trying to explain to them was that on the scale of doing it dangerously, I wasn't using like dirty tools and junk and I was mostly taking care of them.

I think you can, but you really have to concentrate. Some people say they can, but when it comes down to it, the feeling is overwhelming and they can't.
Also, cleaning with antiseptic wipes and putting on a dressing can aid in healing and prevent infection, so is "safer" than leaving a cut untreated
I think to some extent you can cut safer, not safe, it's never going to be safe. But it canbe safer for example if you don't cut deep and use clean tools etc. Also I remember once in hospital one of the nurses told me it was safer to cut in one direction than it was the other. Obviously I can't say whether it was horizontal or vertical because it could be used wrongly and seen as tip-sharing but when she explained it, it did make sense why so I don't know. I think you can to some extent.
much love
You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are.
I used to say I could do it safely too - but to be honest, I don't think it's really true. It just gets worse and worse and before you know it you are doing things you would never have thought of doing - I think you can try to be safe - but accidents can happen and when you are that triggered and the urge is that strong - No I don't think it can be done safely. x

I used to think I was 'cutting safely' when didn't go deep but then I started to realise it wasn't safe at all but wasn't as risky as what I would do when I wanted to be 'unsafe' But when i wanted to be safe there are things i would do like usean older but not blunt tool and just things like that to make sure it was as safe as i could make it
