It depends on the exam board and their rules, etc, I would have thought they'll mark it anyway as it is a fairly new rule & stuffz. However, I'd invest in a black pen as soon as you can!

Yep they should do, On the front of the papers it usually says in blue or black ink, doesn't it?
As long as the examiners can read it, I'm sure it will be just fine. :)

No, all the exams I have done say "black ink or black ball point pen", and I have done 3 GCSEs so far.
This is as they are scanning a lot of them this year, and not marking them with a pen or anything!

As it's a new rule, they may make some exceptions and stuff, but yeah... get a black pen asap is my advice!

It's supposed to be in blank pen so that when it's scanned in it is easier for the examiners to reas becasue they have had problems in the past with it.

I'm sure your's will still be marked, it's just harder to read in theory.
But i'll be fine i'm sure, it's just a precautionary measure at the end of the day now to make sure the scripts can be read.

I can confirm alex's answer.

This year 90% of the exam papers (predominantly AQA) have requested that all candidates write in black pen or black biro.
This is because they have invested in new technology and now scan all answer booklets, email/fax those to the examiner who will be marking them and store them on the system incase they need to looks at them again by your request or random examiner checks.
They are requesting black instead of blue OR black because some shades of blue do not scan very well.
So long as it was not a sky blue gel pen, or low on ink enough to be unscanable - it should be okay, but i would check with your tutor to be sure.
Remember to bring black pens from now on just incase.

my science exam today was meant to be done in black pen i did it in black but thats cos i dont like blue pens for some reason but half the people did it in blue and the invigilators said it doesnt matter just get a black one for next time. so just use a black pen next time dont worry if it was that important they would make it really clear and tell you every five minutes. good luck in yer exams.

Strange - dont like black AT ALL - became very problematic and i argued with the invigilators about it.
I havent written with a black pen in about 10yrs - some sort of OCD thing.
Had a right strop lol.

i have a friend with bad eyesight who can't use black pen because she can't read it.

guess they'd have to make an exception or provide her with a 'reader' to read her answers back or something.

i know we were told back in jan that it was going to be black pen but i think because its a new rule they are letting it slip a little.

Weird, I much prefer black, personally. I think it's a strange rule, but it wouldn't have affected me anyway. I'm sure I changed colour from black to blue half way through my lit A level though!

The Portland public schools already do all their state tests on computers (which I think is a requirement in Oregon rather than just Portland), and I suspect lots of other places do as well. I think the UK should catch up with the times
