slow?
I saw the message on the main page about how V2 was extremely slow. V3 is very slow for me, is it just me or is everyone having this problem?
Sorry if this has been answered before, i searched and found nothing of help.
Also if its available I wouldn't mind knowing the specifications of the server and connection speed that RYL is hosted on, It could help me with my own site/forums

Its not too slow for me, at times though it has been quite slow. I found v2 was slower for me though. *shrugs*

If / when it happens again, take a look at the bottom of the page, where it says This page was generated in :
I would be interested to see what you are getting, but if it is less than half a second as it is for most people then it would seem the slowness is your end, not ours. Everything this end would seem fine, the server is at max health and 1/3rd strain as it has been since launch.
Let me know :)

it currently says 0.3266 seconds.
The problem is even though the page was generated that quickly I will see the top banner for like 2-3 seconds then the page will finish loading. I know its not me, I have a very fast computer and a 15Mbp's connection.. Every other page i go to loads instantly, RYL is the only site i visit that takes more then like a tenth of a second to fully load.
I know its not a big deal but I still thought I should ask.

There are all sorts of internet factors which can effect the speed of RYL for you. From what I can see from your IP, you're out in the US whch means of course you have the trans atlantic lag to contend with - I doubt many sizeable UK based sites will load for you as quickly as 10th of a second.
RYL is a large and complex site and our page sizes are not small (around 200k per user request in total including user session data) - even on a fast connection, when one factors in http round trip times on multiple requests, this can add up timewise.
When the site was in beta, I ran our pages gzip compressed for a little while - this was disabled for compatibility and stability reasons when we went live to the general public. I have temporarily re-enabled compression on our pages however since this is something we were considering anyway and I would be interested to see if this makes any signifcant difference for you?
Regarding your questions about our server specifications, they are as follows: 2x 3.6GHz Xeon 4Mb Cache, 4Gb of RAM running Windows 2003 x64 with IIS, Php and MySQL x64. For storage we currently use 4 x 15.3k SCSI 73Gb in RAID 10.
Please let me know how the performance is for you with the changes mentioned above. Harley and myself take a lot of pride in the speed and reliability of v3 and even under heavy load, I am seeing page load times of no more than 2-3 seconds at our end. It's a great pity if you are not experiencing the same, for whatever reason.
Best wishes,
James
