Blood in phlegm

I had a bit of a cold about 3 weeks ago, nothing major, with no cough, but every day for 4 days I had tiny flecks of blood in my phlegm, just once a day first thing in the morning. I wasn't coughing at all, just had gunk on my lungs that came up. On the fourth day there was about 1/2 teaspoon of blood, then nothing, so I though ah well must have been a chest infection that cleared itself up. I was feeling well about a week and a half ago but it happened again, and hasn't happened since. I've not been to see the doctor yet because getting an appointment is now next to impossible, even though I told them I'd been coughing blood they didn't seem to think it was urgent. I'm still getting phlegm on my chest but it isn't bloody... I know I should go to the doctor, yet on the other hand I know that they won't actually do anything, maybe give me antibiotics (which always make me even more ill as my immune system is always pretty low). Meh?

It is worth going to the doctors, not specifically because of the blood but because of coughing/bring up phlegm all the time as this is a symptom of a chest infection. Does your chest 'rattle'? And is the cough like a chesty one or one from your throat?

The blood probably was nothing to worry about. When it came up in your phlegm it would have been very little and it can often look like there's more than there is as it dyes other fluids very well. It was probably just to do with the irritation/ inflammation present in your throat due to coughing so much and that caused a little blood vessel to break. Have you always been on the same antibiotics? They will actually help you more/ you should need them more if your immune system isn't too good as they act to help that fight the infection. It could be that you're allergic/ have reactions (and these don't have to be really bad but often make you ill) to one or several classes. A common one is Penicillin and people that have problems with Penicillin can have the same ones with Ampicillin too so maybe discuss that with your doctor; they can see what they've prescribed before and look for any connections between the antibiotics and ho they've made you feel.

If you get any medication and you feel ill on it it is worth going to see your doctor at the time or a pharmacist and seeing what they suggest.

It might just have been blood FROM coughing.
I've had that a few times.
But I've also had bronchitis which can make you cough up blood too but if you had that you'd know about it.
Does your chest hurt when you cough? Coz generally that's a sign of a chest infection.
Deffs get it checked out.

You can also go to your local walk in centre who can listen to your chest and if you need antibiotics can give you them. You dont need an appointment to see them, so it might be an idea to get a check up there, especially if you have a temperature.
