Triggering (SI/Abuse) - Job Protection
I know we have people from all over. However, does anyone know if their are laws in the US or UK to protect us ifyour boss confronts and asks for a reason for marks on your arms? Has anyone had to deal with this. I am afraid this may happen on Monday. I cannot sleep. I don't know what to do.

well, if they ask, i dont know. i guess it's only human, if ignorant, to ask if they are curious
if they try and fire you or something that's different. it seems discrimination to me, but it might depend on what it is that you do?
it might be easiest hun for you to cover up? long sleeves or a jacket and maybe you can avoid the whole thing?
good luck

In California we have a labor board. In all of the U.S. we have the Americans with Disabilities Act. I don't know if the ADA would apply here.

My husband is my best friend.
In forgiving others, we are not exonerating them. They may not deserve exoneration. Rather, in forgiving others we are giving up our anger over the fact that what happened is not what "should" have happened or that our life is not the way it "should" have been.

im not sure about you situation...but about 4 years ago i was working in a health care facility. a co-worker accidentally saw my cuts and scars(i tried to hide them always) and told my boss.
i was called into the director of nursing's office and told that i needed to resign. she said i had the choice of resigning or she would have to fire me. she said that people thought i could be a danger to my patients as i was so unstable.
it broke my heart. i resigned so i wouldnt have a termination on my record.
after that....i really went downhill. my job kept me going and when it was gone i ended up in the hospital for 4 months and came out with disability. im still on disability to this day and i HATE it.
sorry for the long story. i could have fought it through the Americans with disabilities Act. i regret that i didnt.
good luck.
loves.

My boss asks when he sees the scars on people's arms we have like two other people who s'i and he just nods his head and asks they keep them covered please As to not offend the Customer.... and if you have any open wounds to cover them for health reasons he even gives you blue band-aids.....
I hope your boss is as understanding if not try the disability act or the mental health act they cant fire you because you have mental health issues but... in some states they can fire you just because they felt like it... though if it's not a good reason they have to pay money in unemployment...

Hi
I really do feel exactly what you're going through with this.
I'm right in the middle of fighting to save my job because my employer found out I used to SI.
I'm afraid I don't know about US but I've learnt just about all there is to know about this situation in UK as it's all I've been dealing with for the past 2 years!!
If there is ANYTHING i can do to help, PM me or just give me a yell in a post. I hope I will be able to help.
Any advice at all I can give or if you want to know what happens and what to expect, again just give me a yell.
Don't let them intimidate you though. They can't fire you on the spot.

In the UK it's the Disability Discrimination Act - but you would need to be diagnosed with a mental illness to be covered.

There's no reason for them not to ask,it's what they do after you tell them.
They can't fire you for it,that's discrimination. You can appeal if they do anything like tell you to quit or whatever.

my managers know, and have been very supportive. i work for the nhs but because i SI i am not a threat to anyone else so job is not even in question, altho have to say i made sure i dont my manager that i really trusted cos was majorly scared the other woudl find a reason to sack me but in the end she was just upset that i didnt tell her directly. before anything like that would happen we have to go through occupational health who assess whether you are fit to be at work- that being you need sick leave, they cannot sack you for dealing with your problems differently from the so called "norm".
id go with the its personal option, they have no right to know or panic you in this way *hug*
