First appointment with NHS psychiatrist
I've been referred to an NHS psychiatrist and I'm terrified about it. Has anyone had these appointments? What sort of thing happens? Do they do an assessment and stuff? What sort of thing do they ask?
Thanks x

There really is nothing to be afraid of. It depends on the psychiatrist what you will do but you usually start looking at why you have been referred to them and identify your main concerns. Then they will be able to refer you to other services and sort out medication for you if you need it. I hope that it goes well for you and that you see a psychiatrist that you get on with. Good luck. Take care. xxx

Yep I see one well.. actually.. i've seen... ::counts:: 8 different ones, due to meet the 9th one this week! They're ok.. stubborn, argumentative, annoyingly insightful sometimes, and also annoyingly ignorant sometimes too! But yeh, they'll go throug he reasons you've been referred, do some assesments to try to formally diagnose you, and maybe talk about medication and stuff. Theyre not that bad, nothing to be scared of :) good luck hun, let me know how it goes, Emma xox
p.s. don't worry you wont see that many psychiatrists.. ive been an inpatient at.. ugh 3 or 4 hospitals now and outpatients.. (both adolecent psych's and adult!)

I've seen a few due to contact with crisis team docs. Had a bit of a personality clash (and I was somewhat unco-operative) with the first psych I saw. Ironically, I am back under her team. Anyway, the point is, all they do is ask you questions just as the others have said and there is usually another psych that you can see if you feel unable to get on with this one.
Sorry - a little waffly.

Yeah ive lost count of the amount of psychs ive seen either from hospital or community teams but please dont be too scared.i know it can be very daunting - especially at first!Though i dont see a psych currently now but think id still find it just a little daunting!!i think its natural but there is usually very little to worry about when you get there.Just be as honest as possible and see if they can help you.Good luck and i hope you get someone you like and feel able to work with. Please let us know how it goes and well done for being brave in taking this step. Here anytime if you want to talk more.

1st one i saw was horrible. didnt give me enough time to actually say anything about how i felt. he just took general details and that was it. needless to say it was the biggest waste of time ever.
My gp is wonderful though. She looked after me for 4 yrs and now i have a ed psych.

Some can be wonderful, some can be utterly unhelpful. I hope that you get a good one.
