Sorry if this has already been asked/answered before.
I'm just wondering what the process entails i.e if your psychiatrist wants to section you, what actually happens in the run up to being admitted somewhere?
Can your psychiatrist/other people involved in your care section you by themselves, or are independant people involved?
If you're under 18 but over 16, can your parent object a section?
It's never happened to me, and I'm sure others will be able to help you by letting you know from their personal experience. In the meantime, here's a few articles from Mind with all the practical and legal information stuff -
i was sectioned while i was already IP.
i was put on a section 5(2) which meant they could hold me for upto 72hours, if i was not seen by a doctor and socal worker within that time i coul leave after the 72hours. i was not allowed to leave the ward so i couldnt smoke or anything, it was horrible.
then i was put on a section2 48hours into my 5(2). being on that was not as bad because i could go out and smoke, i was allowed out with my mum and i was allowed on weekend leave but if they dont think your save they dont have to give you leave etc.
" my precious, precious child, I love you and I would never, never leave you during your times of trials and suffering. When you see only one set of footprints it was then that I carried you" you were carried out of are lifes into the next and when its my time to leave this life I know i will be carried into the next life with you.
I wish i had my world complete again.

ive been on a section3 before and basically my psych, gp and a mental health social worker came around to my house and did an assessment on me and because they deemed it necessary for me to be in hospital even tho i didnt want to go, they sectioned me there and then. I was then escorted by the social worker by ambulance to hospital. They do have to inform ure nearest relative which is usually ure dad (or nearest living male relative - why, i dnt no..) but yes, they can object in which case i think it has to be taken in front of a court but ultimately the court has the right to over-rule ure nearest relative. This hasnt happened with me but i imagine if it did go in front of a court, it would all happen really quickly.
Hope this helps
xx
my mum objected to my section and she was told to appeal again it that was it but saying that when the date come through and everything oh what did they do take me off my section.

When my sisters were sectioned they refused to go so the police had to come and actually handcuff them. My parents didn't object though coz they really needed to be taken away so I'm not sure about that.
I was sectioned wheni was already IP it was a6 month sectiona nd after the first section was over they sectioned meagain for another 6 month so ive been sectioned twice. I wantesd to appeal against it but i was told i had no chance btu i went ahead withit anyway but didnt win.
hey i've been sectioned a couple of time, i was already an ip when i was put on a section 3 after being on a 5(2) for 72 hours. i kept asking to go home told them i wasnt illo and wanted to get out but the staff decided i needed to be in hospital as i wasnt safe the doctor was dealing with an emergancy so they had to put me on a 6 hours nurses section to keep me on the ward until he arrived then on the 3rd day my psychiatrist agreed i needed to stay in so my GP and 2 social workers turend up and asked me loads of questions (theyd also informed me mum to find out what her thoughts were and if she agreed) and decided to put me on a section 3. my mum did agree with that one however i was told if she hadnt she#'d have had to write to the hospital managers or soemthing.
the other 2 sections were section2's. the first one i was taken in from home after the crisis team came out and they wanted to admit me and i kept refusing they had to get the doctor and the social workers to come out along with an on call GP and they sectioned me but they ended up gettin the police as i wasnt very cooperative and they cuffed me and took me to hospital.
the other section 2 i'd been picked up by the police and placed on a section 136 (found in a public place and seen as having mental health issues or summit like that) its happend to me loads. but they ended up sectioning me in AnE onto a section 2 i was in and from 5:30am until 1pm waiting for more docs and social workers to turn up.
your psychaitrst can say yuou need sectioning/they think you do but you have to be assessed by another docotr normall your own GP and 2 social workers. i'm not sure what happend wen ur over 16 but under 18 i think it varies what the issues are. but if parents object i think they have to apply to sum1 to have it re-assesed i kno parents or care givers can ask for you to be admited against your will.
basically it involves lots of people seeing you and asking the same questions. its alwasy better if you can and hospital is mentioned that you agree to go in voluntary.
hope that helped pm if you want to talm or ask anything
Theres a little truth behing every just kidding,
A little curiosity behind every just wondering,
A little knowledge behind every i dont know.
And a little emotion behind every i dont care.
ive been on a section 136 (police section) and i think a few unofficial 'detainments' by the nursing staff ie. they wouldnt let me go, but ive spent quite a long time as a volutary IP (even though some of it was involuntary voluntary...just less paper work i guess).
It cant just be one doctor who makes the decision to section you for longer than 72 hours. I know your nearest relative/care giver can appeal a section by writing to hospital managers. if the hospital managers decide u shouldnt be let go then thats when it becomes a court issue. and then they can over-rule the relative.
Im not sure of the difference tbh of over 18 and 16-18. The only difference i know of is if the 16/17 is placed on an adult ward, they have to by law, be on a 1 to 1. This is for their protection from other patients.
Mental health is a legal business not a medical one. It is not like other medicine such as Cardiology, Maternity or other areas that treat physical health. with Mental health you have to go along with them and once you go near them you have to do what they say.In other areas of medicine you can just walk away but not in Mental Health. The main reason why most people are sectioned is that they do not attend appointments in their day outside hospital clinics which can be found in most towns. However a Gp who knows you is stillneeded to section you. If you go on the NHs you will become trapped in their system which can damage your life forever. So it is better to seek help from an indeoendent organisation and there are plenty of charities which wil help you. Also Mental Health people will just give you powerful medications which can damage your health and you can be forced to take them.It is a money-making business really.Try to find a local independent organisation like the samaritans who will really listen to you and not try to put you down
Well to get placed on the bigger sections (2, 3 etc) you need the opinion of a psychiatrist, a GP and a social worker or your nearest relative. A psychiatrist cannot section you by himself/herself. However there are little/emergency sections which last no longer than a few hours or 3 days which include a nurses holding power for 6 hours, a doctor + social worker can section you for 3 days and the Police can put you on their own emergency section (136) if they find you in public and believe you're currently mentally disordered or attempting suicide/self-harm and will take you to a 'Place of Safety' (police station/hospital). Also with permission from the court, the cops can also place you on a section 135 where they can force entry into your home, restrain you and take you to a Place of Safety.
I don't know the ins and outs of it all, I've only been 136'd myself once and voluntarily committed myself to a psych ward after, but mainly going by what I read.
If you're under 18 and over 16, your parents can object, but I think if they have the support of a social worker still, they section you. But there is a criteria to be sectioned, and it's definitely if you're actively at risk to yourself or others.
