what does this mean??

i had to go into hospital yesterday after me gp told me i had to get some tests done, so she printed off my whole medical history and told me to take it with me. I couldnt help but have a look - as u do! and well it said tht back in 2005 i was put on a severe mental illness register! What the hell does tht mean? Am i 'logged' somewhere as being severly mentally ill?? Its just freaked me and now i feel like a criminal or something...

Oh dear hun I'm sure it's not as bad as it sounds. I find that GP's tend to make things out to be more 'serious' than they are when it comes to medical records as I remember catching a glimpse of something on my doctors screen. It said something like 'Severe mental problems'. Maybe ask when you go back to her? Hope you're as well as can be, love you darling.

I think its probably to do with government statistics, some MH illnesses are classed as severe and others aren't
I used to be on the depression register but now i have a diffferent diagnosis i'm probably on that one aswell
I wouldn't worry too much, but yeah mention to your doctor if its bothering you

its so that if you pop up to local health services in need, they'll respond more rapidly as you're at higher risk. its a safety protocol to manage risk for folks that are vulnerable. i'd agree that its best to ask what it means from the doctor though. always good to get them to explain what the thinking was as you can ask more questions then. it certainly wouldn't mean you're a criminal - if that were the case you'd be on a different kind of register

Ha, like you weren't going to read it :P

Unless it was in an envelope marked for someone else, I'd assume you'd read it! I mean, I have one in my car. (I don't recall where it came from, either. So try not to lose it..)

I do suggest you talk to someone about it, (or do a bit of research on the matter.)

I'm on it too hun and I had the same reaction as you, I felt like a database existed somewhere with my name on it that would mean doctors would treat me negatively. But as it is I've never had any reprocussions from it and it is only there for the good. Try not to worry.

This is part of the "Quality Outcomes Framework", the list is purely for your GP's statistics.

They have to show that people with mental illness are getting the treatment they need ot whatever.

Then they pile up their numbers, then the government ranks GP practices.

It sounds ominous but I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it bothers you ask your doctor to remove you from the list in question.
