Having been looking at the 'Calling all A level students' thread, I've noticed that hardly anyone takes music!! I know a few RYLer's who do it, but not many.
So - How many of you have taken music to A level or Degree level?
If you took a music degree, where did you go?
And what instruments do you play, and to what standard?
I'm taking music A level and love it!! There's soooo much work and it's certainly not an easy subject, but it's fantastic!! I'm hoping to do a music degree after 6th form and am looking at going to Colchester Insitute because although they're not a very well known uni, they have one of the most amazing music departments I have ever seen (it's huge with like 40 practice rooms!!).
As for instruments...I play the flute and piccolo (working for grade 7), recorders (all 5 - sopranino, descant, treble, tenor and bass and am working for grade 7), clarinet (working for grade 5), violin (failed grade 5 this term :P) and piano (working for grade 2/3).
I'm a music tech student. That's something pretty different.
The ironic thing is, I got a D at GCSE level, so I decided to make music my life.
Anyway, I play alot of instruments, I've never taken any grades or had any lessons, but I would kind of like to for the guitar, which is my main instrument. Mainly for a more comprehensive understanding of music...that I can't read. And to learn scales etc.
Coming up to 7 years of the guitar though, so I can play to a pretty high standard, I'm told around 7ish.
And Whooo....Dicky - Is music tech hard. It's something I've always been interested in but never dared venture into!! And also guitars are cool *nods* I want to learn the guitar....so versatile and good for composing!
I've just finished composing a piece, via le computer. It's a remix of a bjork a-cappella, done in the style of Sigur Ros.
It's a big project to undertake for a remix though. It has a string section (albeit 2 violins), trumpets, a tennor horn, bass, guitar, acoustic guitar, bowed guitar and drums. Most of which I am playing myself.
I'm looking forward to it so much. I already recorded the bass and acoustic guitar. The rest has to be done in a studio.

I am! I'm in my 2nd year of BTEC in Music Practice, have a major gig assesment next week..I'm really scared!
but yeah, theres not too many of us music students about ..
are you guys studying contemporary/classical?
also any Music Tech I may have to pick your brains regarding Mics etc soon!

I have no idea what A-level is, but i've been playing Alto-Sax for 10 years :D
I also play Bari-Sax, soprano sax, flute, piccolo, percusion, trumpet, french horn and piano, but Bari and Alto are my number one!! I own my own flute, piano and Alto :D
haha, I'm wearing my school mucic sweater right now. It's like 3 sizes to big so it'd mega comfy!!

I did singing for my exams, and xylophone for my second instrument.
Ive done some audio work for part of my uni course, creating music and sound effects for games, im hoping to stay on for another 2 years to do sound production

I'm doing GCSE Music. I'm intending to do A level and go on to do a degree at Trinity College of Music. They are now the best Music college in the country.
I play Flute (grade 8), Piccolo (want an alto and a bass), Soprano Saxophone, Alto Saxophone (grade 7 jazz), Tenor Saxophone (want a bari), Piano (grade 4), clarinet (grade 3 approx) and various sizes of recorder
i have a almos £2000 concert flute, it a Sankyo. its kool. I'm gonna leave home befor i can get an alto/bass, and i want my own tenor sax and bari sax first. and a new picc. lol
I've taken it for GCSE, and I have my pracs on Monday =/
But yeah I play guitar, and I'm definitely taking music and music tech next year (AS level), and hopefully take some kind of course in some good University if I get good marks, I've heard that Southampton and Cardiff are good for the kinda courses I wanna do =))

Hehe, I have a £1500 TJ Masters Flute and I love it!! What kind of piccolo do you have at the moment. I play a wooden Yamaha YP62 without a lip plate - It's my baby :P
I can't decide what to get first though after my alto flute, the bass flute or bass clarinet. The bass flute is cooler but the bass clarinet is probably cheaper and more useful!

Mine's Sankyo Etude (£1850) lucky moo I want a wooden one...I'm on yamaha, can't remember which model atm...can i steal yours??
I'd say bass clarinet. My brother has one. But if you're getting one and can afford it, get a Selmer, they go down to the bottom C, but are way more expensive. and the best money can buy. My college has two. Bass flutes are just a tiny lil bit of money lol... and you don't just want a bass, you want a triple bass. they go round in a complete triangle and rest on a small peg just off the floor. lol. i have gotta get me one of those...

I didn't get into music college (not good enough lol)
I play flute (got my grade 8 in yr 10, have a Sankyo prima which I love, as well as 2 spares - am totally spoiled by my dad), piccolo (have a wooden Yamaha without a lip plate - can't remember the model), piano (grade 8 in 6th form), and oboe (got grade 4 a year after starting, but haven't done grades since, play around grade 6 level, that ones an Adler). Other instruments that I play without bothering with grades include ocarina, panpipes, a bamboo flute in G, fife and recorder - descant and treble. I love playing alto and bass flutes, but don't have one of my own.

My friend is doing a music degree though! Music and English with the hope of being a music therapist.
