I'm in a bit of a quandry regarding work and I'm not sure what to do.
My senior manager left our company in Jan to work for a new company, a bigger and better company. We got on very well and he always looked upon me as being the best in the department, always came to me for everything including advice believe it or not ! He thought I was always logically sound and very professional, and the appraisal he gave me before he left was absolutely amazing.
Well you can probably guess what's coming next. I got an email from him half an hour ago, he wants me to meet him on a business lunch asap and he's got a job offer. I don't know what to do to be honest. I've been with this current company for just over 3 years and it's a very stable job. I've worked up to Manager level again (was promoted last year to Manager), I wouldn't say I am estatically happy but it's OK and it has it's moments but it is very stressfull sometimes. I am also in the glorious & unprecedented position of being the first one employed in the department (as this IT Support department is only just over 3 years old too), so that makes me the most Senior out of everybody so when it comes to further promotions I will always be in the frame. The salary is excellent here too.
I do like change though, and I have a feeling that this job offer is going to be amazing and that's what I am frightened of. I've not responded to my ex boss as I have no idea what I should do, I want to meet him but I know he will persuade me into it somehow. I also know that if my employers got to hear about it, I will be in serious trouble especially when my boss left they didn't take too well to it because he was an excellent manager, same as me.
Gosh I don't know what to do, do I just walk away or do i go for it???
Thank you ever so much for reading :) *hugs*

People will forget what you said
People will forget what you did
But people will never forget how you made them feel
Go!
What have you got to lose?
Remember, you don't have to say 'yes', but if what he is offering does sound good, then you will be in a better job than before, working with somebody you know respects and likes you.
There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who, when presented with a glass that is exactly half full, say: 'This glass is half full'. And then there are those who say: 'This glass is half empty'.
The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: 'What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass!
Well I responded to him and he's really keen. He really wants to talk to me tonight at 8pm so he's going to call me on my mobile, and he is going to show me around the "prestigious" building on Monday at 14:00. I feel very nervous....

If he gave you such a good appraisal and asked you for advice. Why would he do you wrong??? Maybe he thinks that this other company is better suited for you, ask him about why he has offered you this job and what prospects are there for you.
Compare what each job is offering you, write it down on seperate sheets of paper (the pros and cons). Don't be afraid to pm me if you want. I know i'm young, but don't hold that against me. Even if i'm unable to help, i may spark a brainwave or offer an alternative perspective.
This may sound a bit rude, but can you keep us up-to-date please, thanks. Hope you get on o.k and come to a solution which will be best for you.
So what if you're young! Gosh, advice (especially if logical and sound) doesn't have to always come from someone so much older, to me it really don't bother me, I look at every individual the same regardless of age, colour or creed!! There's no such thing as an "ism" with me I tell ya ! Infact, my ex wife was 5 years younger than me and my ex gf was 14 years younger than me and I respected their views equally. You show respect to people and you will be shown it back, whatever age.
Anyway back to topic, I spoke with my ex manager and he just confirmed the appointment really which thankfully was all he said because I'm well tired anyway adn wasn't up to anything too deep. He also said that Monday's visit was rather a casual affair which really means to me that he's just showing me around and going to offer the job to me at the end of it so there's absolutely no pressure there to perform, well, he knows me well after all he wouldn't have contacted me otherwise. It's rather odd as I've never been in this position before, it feels strange but I do feel quite flattered also, I know my colleagues if they knew of this they would be cursing me lol !
Yes, the pros and cons thing is standard and it's been going through my mind all day, although there's good and bad on both accounts, I guess the most major thing to look out for is stability, that's going to be my key question on Monday. Everything else is perfect, just need to find out what their long term intentions are, it seems all new at the moment and they are trying to grab the best people in to get it going, I am going to be a manager but not a manager of people, more like a project manager in which I prefer actually, I would rather be in charge of myself than be in charge of others who constantly need baby sitting or reminding to do stuff correctly and that does become tedious and annoying.
So yes, that will be the factor on Monday, the key thing is what are their long term aspirations and what were they hoping to achieve and in what timescales, if they can convince me enough and it seems secure, then I may accept even there and then, we shall see. I am still quite nervous though, if I am doing the right thing or not. There is a lot of history where I am now, I created the foundations of that department but I feel that since it's become so busy that I have been pushed aside a bit, so yea, maybe it is time to move on and go somewhere where I am appreciated and where I am starting out a new department all over again, that does excite me a bit actually, I love that type of challange :)
Thanks for reading.

You have nothing to loose and everything to gain so see what happens and if nothing else use it to catch up with your old boss.

Thank you so much for your well wishes, I will let you know what happens on Monday, however, the more I think about it, the more I am leaning towards accepting the offer, but I really have to see if I like the place and the people, discuss particulars and then see what happens then.
Thanks alot,
Take Care.

I just thought I would mention that everything went well, the visit was pleasant, we discussed everything in great detail and a generous offer was made, however, after serious consideration, I will be turning the job down and staying where I am. There's certain aspects of this new job that I didn't like and I don't think i'd be happy there, it's just a hunch I have and I have to listen to it. Money isn't everything.
The tricky part is now telling them I am going to decline the offer as they expected me to accept, I have until tomorrow but I may do it later this afternoon and get it out of the way.
Thanks again for the replies, you have all been ever so helpful :)
I hope you're all ok.

Surely its not that difficult if you simply keep to the point. Say that you've made a decision and that you wish them to respect that decision. Then they're unlikely to ask to as why becasue they feel they'd be simply pushing you away further.
And hunches are often the best. Good judgement comes with experience (yet good experience comes from poor judgement) :P
Anyway, back to the point. Short, simple, and sweet is often the best option.
If your heart aint in it then it's not going to be right for you,
take care

As you're not really aware of the history, then you're not going to know that it is going to be difficult to turn it down because this person went out of his "way", we had a fantastic working relationship prior to this so I think he fully expected for me to take the job there and then, it certainly felt like that from the signals and assumptions he was making (eg, you will be doing this, and you will be doing that, and i'd want you to do this) type talk, referring using my name a lot and stuff, a bit like the old days. I think he was a little taken back that I said I will get back to him, I am kind of hoping that was a strong enough hint that I was going to turn it down. There's just something intransigently not right with the role, I just think I would be very unhappy there.
Thank you for the response :)
