Like the title says, I get absolutely horrible backache. A few months ago, I went to see the doctor, and after asking me a few questions, making me touch my toes (WTF... I typed '**** my toes'...good trick if you can manage it o_O), and asking me to step on the scales, he came to the conclusion that I need to lose weight and exercise, and he couldn't really do much about it apart from telling me to take painkillers. I was just over 14 stone, the heaviest I've ever been x_X.
I was kinda sceptical about this at first, but my gran agreed with the doctor. Apparently, when she gets over 10 stone, her back starts to give her grief. So I guess the doc was right. Admittedly, it took me a while to actually do something about my weight, but I've started to exercise more (I've started doing daily sit ups, too), and I'm back to just over 13 stone, which is how much I weighed a year ago.
My back still hurts like hell. When I started losing the weight, it got better, and then it started hurting like normal, got better again, went back to normal, etc etc. Now it's even worse. It aches almost non stop, changing position doesn't help, or at least not much, and the only times when I'm most likely to get some relief is when I'm either, sitting at the computer (although that doesn't work now - I'm in pain right now X__X), in the shower, or on the dance mat. I'm taking painkillers at least once a day (being careful not to exceed the recommended dose, though) and, blah. It's making sod all difference.
Does anybody on RYL have any theories, or anything that might explain the hell's doing on?
Had the same thing happen for about three weeks, was a real harsh ache to put up with and it came out of no where. No reason for it really as well, though I think it was an inflammination of some sort. If you're doing cardio exercise to lose weight then do no more than four 30 minute sessions per week, as there's a danger of over training.
I have really bad back ache most of the time.
it cracks and clics and twists all the time.
i think its cos of my job though.
deep heat helps.
uyou should look into holistc things, accupuncture, massage, reflexology etc... theyre good.
I do cardio vascular of some sort - because I exercise on my dance mat. I didn't know about the 4 30 minute sessions a week. I've been doing an hour a day x__X, so I'll keep that in mind
Charlie, I tried a deep heat thing, it was a sort of stick on patch thing, but it didn't work, I found. Either it kept falling off, or the ache in my back decided to move, so I'd be forever rearranging it's position ¬___¬
I have really bad back aches all the time, it's because I have scoliosis (my back is 'S' shaped), dont worry about you having that, as the touching the toes thing is a test for it.
With my back aches I find it best to do yoga, the cobra position is the best for me, it clicks my back into place.
Hmm I can't think of any more adivce, I just wanted to let you know you're not alone with the pain.
Also I read somewhere that depression can cause backaches, maybe you could look into that.

Maybe one day she'll be her own"
yeah Dayna, the patches didnt work for me, but Ralgex did.. its a cream that you rub on.
it makes your skin red though.
you could try taking ibuprofen.. 2 every 4 hours for a while.. thats what they adviced me to do with my arthritis in my knee to reduce the swelling or something,
Deep heat cream is the dog's danglies for stuff like this. I absolutely swear by it for all my muscle/skeleton aches and pains.
I wonder if the sit-ups are helping? That might be putting a bit too much strain on your back? Talk to your doctor about what exercises would be best for strengthening your lower back while not stressing it too much. My guess is he'll say go swimming, but I'm no physiotherapist and it could be that sit-ups are good anyway.
If it does persist though make sure you go back and get your doctor to take you seriously - he should do as you've done what you've been told and it doesn't seem to have made a difference.
I get back pain a lot and i really reccomend you go and see a chiropractor (what works best for me) or an osteopath rather than a doctor. These people i trained to look specifically at backs and musculoskeletal probs as opposed to doctors who are more broad range body problems (wow that makes sense) what i mean is if you had tooth ache you'd go and see a dentist, so if you've gotta bad back go and see a back person! They'll be able to go through causes of your back pain and help remedy it plus if you go ask them to give you exercises which you can do everyday at home to help your back - i find these as valuable as the sessions with the chiriopractor.
Try and find a practitioner that is recommended by family / friends, if this is not possible, you can find local practitioners on: the British Chiropractic Association website or the British Osteopathic Association website!
Secondly deep heat actually makes back pain worse in the long term becase it inflames the muscles, you are much better off using biofreeze (would definatly reccomend) or deep freeze or ibuprofen gel (also very good)!
I hope that is of some help, if you have any questions or just want to chat feel free to pm me anytime! Hope you feel better soon!

sometimes i get bad backaches..if you have a recliner..or the couch works too...lay on the floor with your butt against the bottom of the recliner[or couch] with your legs up on the cushion of the chair.. it sort of forces your back to go where it should..not really sure what to tell you if that doesnt work..at least for a few hours
^^Sorry to but in but thats good but makesure you have your head on some books (not a pillow) so that your ear and shoulder are in line otherwise its not good for your neck!
It also works doing the same thing with your feet on the floor and knees bent!
If you do either of these with breething exercises ie. breathing deeply in through nose into your stomach (as opposed to just using your chest) and breathing out through your mouth this will help to relax your back!
It depends where the backache is, if it's at the top then do scapular squeezes a couple of times a day, and just lie on a hard surface for about 20 mins a day.
If it doesn't get better pretty soon, maybe you should try to get an appointment with a chiropractor or physiotherapist.
Don't go to the doctor again, when I went to the doctor they just gave me a hell of a lot of painkillers and told me to get on with it.
Hope you feel better soon!
"Look, from my experience I can tell you that no one is gonna solve your problems for you. You have to deal with your own demons. They're in your head, not anyone elses"
"I like my demons. I consider them close personal friends. In fact, we enjoy each other's company immensely
I get really bad back ache, have done for about 6 years now and I'm only 20. I'm on painkillers constantly and can't get out of bed without them. Nothing really helps with mine but when I was younger I found that physio helped with keeping it mobile and reduced the pain for a few weeks if i had it for a while..... but its no a route I'd take again because having a physio jumping up and down on your back for 10 minutes hurts a lot. At the moment I'm having hydrotherapy and though I've only had one session I like it better than physio so maybe see about getting referred to see a physio.
I'm kind of used to it, but yeh it does get quite bad and makes me feel really ill. I flooded my bed out last night because I went to sleep on a hot water bottle that decided to leak everywhere, I wasn't impressed!!! Hope everything turns out ok and it starts to improve soon
