She looked up at the sky, hoping to find the comfort. All she saw was her friend, the moon. Its light smiled upon her, bathing her in a light gold hue. She fell back upon the grass, basking in the glory of the stars, her white dress reflecting the smiling moon. Her eyes poured out her soul—droplets that helped all her sorrows incased in them. They threatened to fall faster, but she didn’t let them. She intertwined her fingers into the grass, as if the earth were her lover. She closed her eyes, her mind projecting pictures of all her sins. She opened them again, this time only half-open. Her black hair was painted as dark as her sins were painted onto her heart. Her soft blue eyes told of the innocence she stilled retained. Yet she lay there, alone, only with herself to feel how she does and with her regret. She looked up at the moon. It still smiled upon her, the only thing forgiving in her life. She breathed in a sigh of relief, closed her eyes, and took her last breath.
A small child, clothed in purple watched the girl take her last breath. Her eyes, full of green innocence traced the girl’s outline. The child in purple was only 3 years old, with hair painted white, the color of purity and innocence. She ran over to the young girl. She picked up the pale hand, feeling no warmth radiating from it. Intrigued, the smaller girl lifted the hand to her face, expecting the other to open her eyes and smile upon her like she always did.
“Mother,” the white-haired vampire whispered. “Mother, you can wake up now. Father is gone. He went away, taking the other woman with him.”
But Mother did not open her eyes. She still lay there in her “sleep”. Still confused, the vampire child lay down next to Mother and wrapped Mother’s arms around her, expecting her to wake up.
An old woman, who also had white hair, but from old age and fierce brown eyes took up the child and delivered her to her father.

Korin’s father never paid much attention to her. She always was in the care of the other woman, or Ruka, her archery instructor. The young half-vampire, half-mortal, was now seven years old. Her green eyes watched as Ruka stringed an arrow on the bow. Ruka pulled back the arrow and let it fly, with a purple glow of energy surrounding it.
She then gave it to Korin, the bow and an arrow. Korin let the arrow fly and it hit the tree, shattering several layers of bark. Ruka nodded, pleased with the girl’s work.
“Korin,” stated Ruka, “What is an assassin’s credo?”
Korin looked unemotionally at her master. “To trust no one. Not even oneself, or thy master.”
Ruka smiled yet again. “You have been trained well. Xorxa will be proud of the next Yunai Guardian that he has bred. I hear you mother is quite unlike you… She’s human I suppose?”
Korin whipped around to look at Ruka. “Master, that other woman is NOT my mother. She is my father’s mistress. I will not ever call the other woman mother. I have no mother, or father. I have Master. That is all I need.”
Ruka’s eyes reflected a bit of danger. “Young assassin, you have no one—not even yourself. Never forget that.”
Korin nodded, letting her emotions go from her mind. She had no one, not even herself. Already at the age of seven, she had mastered the arts of archery, meditation, swordsmanship and a few things in telepathy. She had also honed her emotions to the back of her mind. Korin learned to trust no one and never accept help from anyone.
Ruka smiled down at her student. Ruka was not stupid. If there was one thing she must do, it is to teach the vampireling how to kill properly. And she had the proper training assignment, a village of helpless lycans and demons. Ruka would force the child to kill the entire village without hesitation. If she passed, then she would be returned to her father, to grow up partly normally.
The next day the old assassin and her disciple walked out onto a ridge that hung in a high hill above the small village. Ruka told Korin what to do from there.
“Rain destruction upon the village. Leave no one standing. If anyone is left alive, you have failed me and I will have to kill you.”
Korin nodded, arming her bow in a quick succession, with arrows raining down upon the village. Their screams of terror delighted Korin, and she smiled heartlessly as the entire village perished under the shower of arrows. The arrows glowed a light purple, and anything they touched turned to flame, burned and turned to ash. It was only fifteen minutes before the whole village was in ruins. Korin, without any orders, jumped off the cliff. A pair of black wings erected from her back the moment she jumped, slowing her descent as she touched the ground lightly, her dull grey dress fluttering about her.
The wings melted against her back again, and she ran like a child who had the best Christmas ever through the rubble. Korin looked through all the ruins, and noticed a small child, about her age, still moving. He was glowing a faint red. He was a demon—the scent was distinct to a demon’s scent. She ran forward, looking at him. He was still alive. She could see his breathing. She ruthlessly turned the child over the demonling with her foot.
“I should kill you, you damn fool! You should not have resisted your fate! Why didn’t you die?” she demanded of the demon.
She gazed down at a child, roughly the age of eight, with black hair, fair skin color, dressed in ragged clothed that were torn in many places and coated with blood from wounds. The demonling had small vampire fangs that were visible, a lycan tail that was black, lycan ears protruding from his head.
“Answer me! Answer me, you bloody demon!” growled Korin.
The boy opened his eyes, which were a brilliant red. “A-are you an angel?” he whispered, faintly reaching up a weakened hand.
Korin doubled back in shock. All her life she had been called “urchin”, “brat”, “vampireling”, and “wench”. However, never in her life was she called “angel”. Her hardened eyes eased greatly, and she knelt down to the young boy. “Tell me you name, demon.”
When she knelt down, the boy grasped her hand and looked at her, and smiled faintly. “Morix…” he returned in a whisper. His eyes filled with tears. “Please, don’t let the gods take me yet. Please, Angel…”
Korin was surprised to see what the demon did. She bit her other wrist deeply, and blood immediately flooded the newly made wound. She pressed the blood to his lips, and he lapped it slowly, knowing that the vampire’s blood would heal him quicker.
Korin knew her master was coming soon, so she picked up the boy and flew over to a clearing where there was a running stream, and laid him down. As she looked down at the boy, he grasped her hand yet again.
“Angel…” he said, his voice a bit stronger now. Korin smiled a tiny bit, and knelt down to his ear.
“Next time we meet, you will have to kill me. I am no angel. Good bye, Morix, and take care.”
Korin unfastened a medallion from around her neck with a crescent moon on it. She fastened it around Morix’s neck and got up. She walked away, seeing Ruka a few yards ahead. She ran to her master and bowed. “Master, I have scanned everyone. They are all dead.”
Ruka nodded, and smiled. She was pleased with her student. Ruka had not seen her disciple take care of the demon. She started walking back to the villa where Korin’s father lived. Korin followed her master, but her thoughts drifted back to the demon boy; his soft black hair, his crimson eyes. She could see how he had mistaken her as an angel—her white hair and brilliant green eyes.

Korin, sixteen now, had been left in the care of the other woman and Xorxa. She sat in the garden, plying through a few books on the history of the Yunai, her tribe of humans that she descended from them. She was to become the guardian the next day, her seventeenth birthday. A light wind blew, kicking up the skirts of her dress, which was a sapphire blue, set with a silver chord. She indeed looked like an angel.
The wind stopped, ominously. Korin looked up. Standing atop one of the fence posts was a tall yet pale demon, with fierce red eyes looking down at her. He had a black cloak wrapped about him, his unkempt black hair had fallen into his face, with his black ears a slightly lighter black than his hair. Korin smiled.
“Morix.” Korin got up, letting her books fall to the ground, and ran to the demon. Morix leapt down, touching down effortlessly. He held out his arms, and taking the girl in his arms.
“It has been three years, love. I have missed you,” said Korin, burying her head in his shoulder. She had never told him that it was she that destroyed his family. Morix came and visited many times, but had to leave on a three-year journey. All he knew about his Korin was that she was a half vampire, and that she was his mate. He didn’t want to know anything else about her.
“I know, Angel.” He wrapped them both in his cloak, holding her close. He had not the nerve to kill her the time he found her after she had saved his life. He loved her ever since. He knew she was an assassin, but this would be the last time he will ever see her.
Ruka was overseeing the whole thing, from atop the roof. Ruka was not pleased that her disciple had changed since she was changing without her influence.
Korin looked up at Morix. “I have missed you, love, very much. But you know that the ceremony is-“
“-tomorrow,” finished Morix, with disgust. He looked into her green eyes, searching them for denial. “Come away with me, Angel, to escape this wretched fate.”
“No I cannot. I have to fulfill my mother’s position. You know that. I will belong to the Goddess then,” said Korin sadly.
“You are mine, Korin. You have been mine since I mated you three years ago.”
Korin blushed in the memory. “Yes. I know. But you know what must come.”
Morix held her tightly again, and pressed his lips against hers passionately, and then pulled back to look at her again.
“No matter, you are still an angel in my eyes. Not a damn guardian of humans.”
“These humans are my people, love,” countered Korin.
Morix chuckled. “Yes, yes. I know.”
Ruka intervened. “Korin, you have failed me here and now.”
Korin’s eyes hardened. “Master…”
Ruka looked beyond the young half vampire. “You are no student of mine unless you cast him aside, and promise me never to talk to him again. You must kill him next time you see him, no less.”
Korin knew her master meant to kill Morix if she refused. Korin moved away from Morix, and looked him in the eye, her eyes hardening. “Morix, I renounce you. I renounce your love, for I am an assassin. Assassins need no one; trust no one; and have no one—not even one’s own self. BEGONE, DEMON!”
Morix, confused and hurt, vanished upon her command, because her magic forced him out of her villa garden. Ruka smiled, and faded away into the darkness. Korin, once her master was gone, collapsed to the ground, crying in silent sobs.

Green eyes flash open, and the vampire girl sat up, holding her head with the memory. At age 17, she had grown to look like her mother, with the exception of her father’s hair and eyes. The other woman walked into her room, opening the curtains. Casting an expectant glance at the vampire girl, she spoke in a soft tone. The light reflected off her soft auburn hair and blue eyes.
“Korin, time to wake up. Father expects you in the garden. He wants you to go to the Yunai meeting. He says your Human tribe is meeting over what to do with you.”
Korin sat up stonily, her backbone rigged. She then got up, with the other woman watching her every move. The other woman helped her dress in a red and white Shinto priestess outfit and led her down the hall of the small house and into the back yard littered with dead trees. The other woman saw Father, bowed and looked him not quite in the eye, and spoke. Father stood just as rigid as Korin, with white hair tied back, his green eyes reflecting hatred upon Korin.
“Xorxa, dear, Korin is ready for the Yunai meeting.”
Father looked at his wife, the other woman. He smiled faintly, and then looked at Korin.
“Your tribe will determine your fate, Human. Unfortunately, your mother’s premature death as the Guardian of the Village of Water has caused you to become the protector. It is about time you go back to your place, Human.”
He then led her down a path to a small village with huts and a town square. The square had a pentagram in the middle, dug in small ditches with water, colored purple, in the fillings. A woman, with purple hair, along with all the other villagers, surrounded it. Xorxa stepped out the way, allowing Korin to step into the center. Her green eyes hardened when the villagers circled around the pentagram. Xorxa stood in front of his daughter outside the pentagram.
“Yunai, Humans of the element of the Blessed water goddess Korae, accept this Daughter of the Village as the next Guardian, taking her in the place of Kiro, daughter of Kirae. Erase the earthly mother she had, making her Daughter of the Goddess, as proclaimed in the ancient descendants of the Goddess of the first generation. Take her now as she gives up her life to be the Guardian of her people,” proclaimed Xorxa, having done this with generations of producing the guardians for the village.
Blue light flashed, encasing Korin in a dome of water. She fell to her knees as cross stigmata carved itself into her wrists and the blood turned to a blue color. She cried out in pain, and cat ears and a tail sprouted, colored purple. Her eyes opened, them turning purple as well as her hair. Her body rose up, the stigmata healing, her body glowing a blue color. A faint vision of her mother flew out of her eyes, and then looked at her. Her Mother looked at her, with sad blue eyes. Her hair was blue, her body and clothes had a blue hue to them. She placed her ghost-like hands on her daughter’s face and looked into her daughter’s eyes.
“Korin, as you forget me and forget everything that you have ever known, be strong. I love you, my daughter, and you will fulfill the rank as well as I did. I’m sorry you had to be born to me, that you could not live a normal life and be happy. You are not mine anymore, but the Goddess’s child now.”
The vision faded and Korin dropped the ground. She got up, her eyes reflecting a heartless, memory less girl of 17. She then spoke. “I, Korin, am Daughter of Korae.”
In the background, the same woman with white hair and piercing brown eyes smiled to herself, as the village went into flames instantly. It all vanished, everyone in the village and even Xorxa himself. The woman walked over to Korin, placing her hand upon Korin’s head.
“You are Korin. You are my ward, I taught you to be an assassin. You followed me, and helped me in the slaying of the Demons as you were destined to do. You are half Vampire, half Human. You serve me. Your final task is…” and Master Ruka, the old woman, leaned in and told her the secret, and Korin’s eyes hardened. Then the memory left Korin, and all that she knew was that she had to fulfill the final request to Ruka, and that she was half vampire, half human and from the tribe of the Yunai, and the ward of an assassin.
Korin nodded. Then Master Ruka disappeared, leaving the young Korin alone, not ever remembering whom she truly was. Every time she tried to remember, her head would throb and her stigmata would appear, but then it would all go away if she stopped remembering. She killed relentlessly, not caring of the feelings of others.
