Okay don't laugh, but my little Hampster Cookie Crumble (you can call her Cookie) - I called her that cause I thought she looked like a Cookie. Hehe. Anyhoo. I'm scared about her because well:
My last beautiful hampster Miss Holly Golightly (Bless her) died horribly and she had to be put down and when she had to be put down she wasn't eating and her teeth were frightfully long.
Cookie is gnawing and is healthy and happy but she's only gnawing on the one tooth. And the other day when she opened her mouth to yawn and her tooth is frightfully long, I gave her a chewing block and a piece of cuttle fish to sharpen up on but she's taking no notice of those. It's getting longer.
Right, we have an appointment at the vet on thursday for Oscar so should I take her along do you recon? Is it possible to clip such a tiny animals teeth? Does anyone have any advice or sujjesgions? I know I sound silly but I love her and I'm worried about my baby.:::
Yeah take her along, they will most likely to able to help her - I know long teeth can be a problem for rats as well, and the vet will fix this by clipping them. I've even heard of people clipping their own pet's teeth, although with something as small as a hamser I'm not sure if this would be a good idea! It's not silly at all to be worried about your pet - best of luck to you and little Cookie x
Thank you Sugar, yeah it's just that with such a tiny aminal I didn't know if the vet WOULD be able to clip them but I will take her to have them sorted out. I did call the vet for advice but the nurse didn't call me :( Thanks againeos.
Awww, cute hamster.
Well this is my first post here so lets see how it goes... I'm a Vet student in my second year and have a hamster so I know some things about them but it is always best to see a vet.
Firstly, how old's Cookie?
What it sounds like to me is that her teeth don't line up properly so the ones at the front aren't lining up properly as she grinds away with the teeth at the back. Basically, there is little you can do with a hamster to sort out their back teeth (but it might not be them) so it will be hard if she can't grind them properly so her front ones will have problems. But, a vet can clip them so that they are at the same height. This will fix the problem in the short term but will not stop it happening again and with their teeth probably growing around the 2mm a day mark they will get back in that position after a while, but at least it will make her feel better, and then she might be able to gnaw on the wood/cuttlefish you've given her which is a good idea.
Is she eating. If you you could maybe give her some baby food, and if you have a syringe and wont eat it, maybe syringe tiny bits into her mouth (whilst being very careful and making sure she's swallowing it)
I clip my gerbil's teeth, but it's not easy.
Like animad said, try syringe feeding her, if she has a water bottle it may hurt her teeth to try and drink, so maybe give her water, if she likes peas maybe mash some up and syringe them to her. BUt yeh, take her to the vet. Hope it goes ok.
Thanks sooo much guys. Kim - She is about a year now, she's happy and that but I do think it's causing her problems with eating as she's losing a bit of weight, not horribly thought but she's a naturally big hampster. So I will feed her with a syringe and take her on thursday. Thanks again sooo much guys.
Cool, mines about that age too. Its unlikely to be due to a problem she was born with then if this is the first time you've noticed her teeth growing like this so thats good. Yeh, baby stuffs great for them, like vegetable flavours rather than meat (if they do meat baby food, I don't know!), if they're not eating. Hopefully the vet will clip her teeth back and she'll feel better and then start eating more herself, it can't be easy if your teeth are all wonky!!!
I would definitely take her with you, but perhaps call ahead, 'cause she might have to be seen by an exotic animal specialist which most vet clinics etc. have. I'm sure she'll be fine. My rat is odd in that she lets her teeth get crazy long before she remembers that she has chew blocks. Animals can be strange, but try not to worry about her until you hear what the vet has to say.
I want to stay in love with my sorrow.
Oh, but God, I want to let it go.
If you look in the mirror and don't like what you see, you can find out first-hand what it's like to be me.
You'll need a symphony to give sympathy to the girl with the worst luck in town.
When I care, it curls me up on the floor and I swear I can't do it anymore.
Oh yeh, and it might be an idea to ring the vets up beforehand and just mention you're bringing Cookie if you're going with another animal just so the vet can be prepared and stuff because sometimes people can just book an appontment for one animal and bring about 10 and the vets not prepared or is a bit busy but thats a bit of an overexaggeration in your case afterall I wouldn't have a problem with you just bringing an extra hamster in unannounced (but then again I'm not a vet yet and haven't been doing a ten hour **** with no breaks!)
