*SO* Frustrated - RYL not working on my home PC

I'm feeling...well as the title suggests, very frustrated.

I've only just come home from hospital (pych ward)
and I miss RYL and I'm feeling SO stressed right now and the fact that I don't have access to the site (it sounds really stupid I know!)
is making me feel stressed/depressed....

blah....sorry, this is pointless..I know that the site is working (I'm on my dads laptop, which is very annoying!)

Anybody know anything about computers?
There aren't any blocks or web site blockers or pop up problems,
its like, I type the adress into the adress bar.
RYL home page comes up fine.
But from there on if I click on *any* link on the home page, absolutly nothing happens, no loading, no error messages, nothing.

I absolutly cannot think what this could be, I think I've tried everything to do with my internet settings, also tried troublshooting on PC.

Anybody know what could be stopping links from loading?
It only happens with RYL

grrrr

i used to have the same problem until i figured that the modem couldn't load enough of the thingys per second like broadband so it couldn't cope with the site (okay, that made no sense)

A couple things to try...

As said above, delete your cookies, temp web files, and your search history (note: make sure you know all your passwords, the cookies are what hold these- you will have to log into everything again!)

Go to 'My computer' Right click and pull up the properties and copy all that, send it in a PM.
Take a screen shot of your desktop, send that along as well.
Then go down to your start menu, and float your cursor above programs so you can see all the stuff installed on your PC, send that along as well.

If RYL can't handle those screen shots, I'll give you your other e-mail...

I'm a systems admin so..I hope I can help.

Jess, what antivirus software are you running on the problematic computer? Is it Windows XP or Windows Vista do you know? We have another member who experienced a similar issue to you.

Very glad you were able to get things going with Firefox. Any information you can provide would greatly help us in resolving this for other members.

Thanks so much :)

I have the same problem too, and I use the same solution.
I'm on XP Home SP1 and I use Avast antivirus. I still get the problem with the antivirus turned off though.

Asi, fully turned off may not necessarily resolve the problem (bizarrely). Is it possible you could temporarily try disabling the Web Shield component of Avast?

Once you have discovered whether or not that makes any difference, you can of course switch it back on.

Avast has been causing us a lot of issues recently. There are *very* few reasons why RYL would fail to work as described above - the cause is almost certainly software running on your computer and Jess's.

Please let me know how you get on. Thanks :)

EDIT: Jess, are you running Avast too?

Turning the web shield off fixed it, but now I've turned the web shield on again and everything's still working
I'll see how it works tomorrow after I've restarted my computer.

I also get the chat problem in both IE and Firefox, and turning the web shield off didn't fix that.

edit> okay, it stopped working again shortly after I made this post. I turned the web shield off again but it still wouldn't work.

I'm afraid I still suspect your antivirus to be at fault - the Avast Web Shield has a history of causing issues for web sites with complex pages.

This is a big ask I know, but would you be prepared to completely uninstall Avast and then install a free demo copy of NOD32, which you can find at the following link:

https://secure.eset.co.uk/forms/trial.asp

This is some of the best antivirus software out there, and I know it to be extremely reliable based on my work as an IT consultant for numerous clients.

I quite understand if you don't want to go to the trouble of doing all the above, but if you were able to try that for me, and then post back here it would be an *enormous* help to RYL!

Don't forget to uninstall Avast fully and reboot your system *before* attempting to install NOD32 - very important as I'm sure you know since more than one AV product installed at a time will hose your system!

Thanks a million in advance :)

P.S. Having done all the above, you are of course more than welcome to switch back to Avast - I'm only recommending what in my experience is best for users.

I've uninstalled Avast now. I decided to try RYL before installing another antivirus, just to know for sure if it was an antivirus causing the problem. It's still giving me the same problems though. The forums were working for a while, then pages just stopped loading. The chatroom won't open and I just get a blue or white screen.

If this is important, I'm on a wireless network but the router's firewall has been disabled. RYL works on other computers in the same network and in other browsers on the same computer.

Thanks for the info Asi - the fact that RYL works on other computers on your network means that this is definitely a software issue, and not a problem at our end.

It would be nice to identify the cause though, for the benefit of other members.

Did you reboot your system after Avast was uninstalled? The fact that you've been having problems and Avast was on the machine at some point is perhaps too much of a coincidence. I wonder if perhaps their uninstaller is not cleaning up all the Avast components fully.

I did reboot after the uninstall. The avast folder and some subfolders are still there, but they're all empty, even of hidden and system files. There's nothing about Avast in add/remove programs or msconfig any more either.

i have experienced a similar problem to the one the thread starter was talking about. But might be cos im on dial up and Windows 98 lol!!!!The only way im on here now is cos it works after i brought OnSpeed which is a program to speed up dial up connection. However OnSpeed didnt like my printer so have had to uninstall that and doesnt like my access technology [specialist magnification and speech program for visually impaired] so cant use both together at the moment so seems to be one or the other!!

Just thought id put this up here but at least im here now!
