It's natural to get a high after you cut. When you hurt yourself (intentionally or accidentally) endorphins rush to your brain to alleviate the pain (natural pain killer). Endorphins cause good feelings, or happiness. It's been suggested (but never conclusively proven) that people who have a tendency towards self harm release more endorphins.

The important thing to realize is, though it may feel fantastic/calming/insert happy feeling here, it will only do so at the moment, and then after that comes the crash of guilt and self hate and the need to repeat the process. Plus, we all know that pain killers are addictive. Pretty much, people who self harm are addicted to natural pain killers.

And yeah, I miss it too.

I do not want to know myself. I do not want to be myself. I know better, so I will strive to be better.

Hmmm, I've just been thinking. I'm a self harmer, I'm also on painkillers long term. It's right that they do act via endorphins. Strong painkillers are structurally similar to endorphins and self harm causes a massive sudden release of endorphins and adrenaline into the blood. You'd have thought from that I'd become addicted to painkillers as I have selh harm, but I'm not an the slightest. I don't feel a 'high' off them anymore, yeah I do when I first start on a new drug but don't after a while yet I don't have to cut deeper for the same release so I dunno why I'm addicted to it really but then again I am the girl that decided to give up chocolate and went through withdrawal with it and that also causes a release of endorphins.

I get a high of SH like nothing else and thats whats making it so hard for me to give up (that and the fact that I'm going through a really rough point in my life at the moment too).

God I miss cutting so much at the moment
