So, I got my dad to take me to the doctor about my insane migraines. I've been having migraines at least three times a week, inexplicably. And my mood swings...gosh, I feel like I'm on something already without all this medicine. Anyways, I also have meds for my mood swings and my insomnia, which brings me to the subject of this rather rant-filled thread.
How much experience does anyone have with antideppressents? Because guess what I have?! Medicine scares the hell out of me. Just the concept freaks me out. And I looked up this medicine, and it said some of the side effects are deppression and suicidal thoughts.
Well, what the crap? It's supposed to cure the deppression, not make it worse! And, my gosh, how are they going to make me worse? I struggle with urges for what seems like all the day, and I have come close to a break down several times this week. Am I actually going to break down on this medicine? Should I just start tonguing my meds again?
I do not want to know myself. I do not want to be myself. I know better, so I will strive to be better.
I think almost every medication says that a side affect is depression and suicidal thoughts. Moreso, I think the side affect is generally at the beginning of the medication, when you are just starting. At this time I recommended you take note of how you're feeling and let the doctor "monitor" how you're going - do you have a follow up session?
After a while, the medication should settle down and work more towards helping you then having side-affects, and until then I suggest you just look after yourself.
And no, tonguing your meds isn't going to help any of this.
If you have any questions why not talk to your doctor about it?
Best Wishes,

Well, mainly I didn't voice my concerns because neither my doctor nor my father knows about my past issues with self harm. My dad know I "used to" self harm, but he doesn't know to what extent or what happened. The doctor I'm speaking of is my family docotor. I don't have a therapist. Doctors scare me too.
I'm afraid if I voice any of my concerns about going bonkers on the meds, then they'll really start in on the medication and the therapy and goodness knows what. So, yes, I'm afraid. I have iatrophobia (fear of docoters). I know it's stupid, but I can't help but demand to be in control. The idea that the medication could hurt me scares me.
Anyways, I'll try it. I've got to do something. And if it will help these headaches.

What medication is it?
Some of the antidepressants have depression and suicidal thoughts as a sde effect for the first few weeks, i think mainly due to the fact that before many people are started on them they are not very motivated and then when the antidepressant starts to kick in a small amount they have more energy and motivation but do not feel better so are more likely to attempt suicide. Does that make sense? I'm sure i heard that somewhere, otherwise i may have just completely made it up!
It's not a good idea to tongue your meds. If you really don't want to take them then you should tell the doctor, they only want to help he wouldn't do anything to harm you. But i do suggest that you try taking them as they may really help with your problems.

I'm sorry I didn't mention it earleir. It's Tofranil-PM. And yeah, sopranonut, that did make a lot of sense. By the way, thanks to all of you for your support. I really appreciate it.
So, day one of the meds. I took the meds, as I was told, before I went to bed. Well, it didn't really knock me out. I stayed up until midnight. Granted, that's a little earlier than my normal bedtime, but still, I was hoping the medicine would work. When I got up the next morning, I felt groggy, had a slight headache, and felt a bit neuseas. I've never had a hangover, but I imagine that if you were to water one down, that's what I felt like this morning. In addition, I felt extremely sedated. So, I really had no energy, didn't much care about anything, and couldn't really complete a thought. But was oddly calm.
Now, of course, because I couldn't seem to think straight about anything, I forgot not only my lunch but my morning coffee (which is vital to my being). Irony would make it that I have hypoglycemia, of course, so luckily that sedated feeling wore off around the same time the extreme shaking of low blood sugar kicked in. That was around twelve.
Anyways, I'm thinking that I'm going to give the medicine a week before I really judge it. I hope that it doesn't consider to do that sedating bit, because I felt awful for most of the day. But I think maybe, since it's the first day, it was a bit more potent? I don't know. I'm not an expert. There was no decrease in suicidal thoughts or urges, but no increase either...although I did catch myself biting a few times...
Any thoughts, questions, concerns? Input from those with wisdom?

Side effects at the start of medicine is by far the worst part. After a week or so they should start to go away and normally 2-4 weeks before any difference in how you are feeling and around 6 weeks where you will feel the most difference. Of course that is different with everyone. I know it seems like a long time to be on medicine before knowing if it is working, but if it does end up working out for you it will be worth it.

I can't really seem to think or concentrate. We're reading The Great Gatsby in English, and normally this is my favorite subject. I read all the time, but now when I read I can't seem to retain what I read or understand what's going on - and the voice in Gatsby is very simplistic.
I looked up the info on the meds again, and it said that the amount the doctor gave me to take is not recommended in adolescents. I'm also numb in certain places, very tired, and I can't seem to get my mouth to stop being dry.
I think I'm going to stop taking it. Just until I can find out from the doctor's office why I'm having weird reactions.

if you stop taking it you will have basically the same side effects all over again. keep with it. it took me 2 weeks for the side effects to go away just hang in there.
