selflessness??

so heres a little back ground story. my parents buy food that half the time no one ever eats. i ditched class today and was on a cleaning rampage so i went through the pantry pulled out all these boxes of food cans, etc that we i know, wont eat and donated it all and covered the spots up with other food.

the places normally ask after a donation if you want a receipt which is generally used for your tax deduction

so i ask this,

isnt it contradicting when you donate suposedly out of good will, out of your heart and the spirit of giving then trurn around and use charity as a deduction on your tax forms? doenst that kinda steal the purpose of giving-its supposed to be out fo teh goodness of your heart, out of selfless ness then you turn around and take it all back by taking it back out of your taxes...
people are supposed to not care who gets credit for the donation, to do it anonymously, its just the gift of giving.

i see it as defeating the purpose (getting a receipt and taking it out of taxes). anyone else have anythoughts?

And it's usually not out of the kindness of my heart, it's because i don't need stuff anymore, and want to get rid of it.

Taxes and "giving" are a complicated affair. The government makes people give (taxes) and often more than they could afford. Then people have to figure out how "to give" to be able "to keep". Of course the underlying assumption is that your money isn't yours but the governements - and they let you keep some. One "advantage" to the tax code is it encourages people and corporations to make donations. Of course it might be nice if they thought to do it on their own and didn't have governemnt coercing it. The whole system is buggered really.

It doesnt make any difference to you. They can claim money from the government because you are a tax payer.

although, to be honest, about half the people who donate in my shop give fake details. shrug. and i can't really say to them "thats a fake name/address"..
