Fluoxetine. Why am I on it?

I just had my first appointment with a psychiatrist, and he put me straight on fluoxetine/prozac.

Before that, my counselor had told me that it was unlikely that I'd be put on meds as I'm under 18, and he didn't think that I was clinically depressed.

It's only a very low dose, so that I don't get side effects. I'm going back next week, and if it helps, I'll be put on a higher dose.

I wasn't told that I have depression, or any mental disorder. But I wasn't told that I didn't either...

I'm awfully confused. Do I have something? Why am I on meds if I don't?
I'm going to ask when I go back in a week, but it's really bugging me.

Heya,

Think that it's important that you tell your psychiatrist how your feeling! Meds should only be prescribed in agreement with yourself! I wouldn't have thought that there would be much of a difference in a week as it can take several weeks to build up in your system!

Obviously I don't know your history, so it is important to discuss your concerns with them!

As for this minute how are you feelin just now?

Yes, I agreed. As I do have a low mood. I'm a self harmer. etc.

But is that really enough of a reason to be prescribed anti depressants?

I never really thought about it at the time. But I just want to know if I do have something clinical. The psychiatrist did say depression a few times, but he could have meant it in a general or clinical way.

I'm feeling the same as I usually do. But then I only started taking it on Monday. So yeah...

Well in some ways the problem is going to be clinical because depression is caused phsically by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain, although the reasons for bein depressed can vary far and wide! Only you'll know if it feels right for you been on them! (I've been on the same meds Fluoxetine for 5 years now a\and I have found it to be extremely helpfull!)

Ask him why he gave them to you, I mean, either he has a "good" reason (maybe depression, maybe he thinks that they'll help with the SI, i.e. reasons for doing it, stress or whatever reason).

Alternatively he could just be one of those psychs who throw drugs at people and tell them to get better, but hopefully not.

Ask him, it's your body, and you have a damn good right to know what's going on with it.

Everyone's crazy; some people just hide it better. I am not one of those people.

if he has put u on this AD the most likely reason is for depression.
doctors dont like putting young people on AD as there could be a number of reasons why there are feeling low etc....one of the major ones being hormones from going through puberty.
make sure you ask him though cuz if u dont u will never know.

fluoxitine can be helpful in anxiety and impulsiveness and are often prescribed to bulimics to help curb their urges to binge. Being this unsure why ure on them indicates u really shood go bak to the dr and ask them why they put u on them. Although u were told tht they dnt like prescribing to under 18s, a lot of the time they do, i was 15 wen i first went of anti-ds.
Hope this helps

prozac is one of the ones they can use on under 18's if they have a good reason.
i first went on that when i was 13 and im nearly 17 now.
you have to ask all the things you want to next week.

I was first put on anti-depressants at age 11. I went on prozac (fluoxetine) at 13. For me, I was put on it for major depression. I went back on it for 2 weeks in combination with Tegretol about 2 months ago and was suicidal.

I too used to think that medication was the end of the world and that it was shameful to be on them. However, after 10+ meds, I realized they have been helpful, some more than others.

If you are a self-harmer, there are medications for impulse control. Prozac IS used to treat depression. While you may not be majorly depressed, there are MANY forms of depression, from single episode to major. Perhaps you only need medications to regulate your mood. While age is a factor for some medications, I do not believe that there is one for Prozac (?), I would just watch for any signs of irrational/suicidal behavior.

Don't feel as if medications are "labeling" you as anything or because you are on them, you are being "diagnosed." Many, many people are depressed, some just need a little help in dealing with it.

((Hugs)) and good luck!

Thanks for all the replies :)

I had a twitchy leg earlier, and also felt really cold, but was warm and sweaty at the same time. Side effects? Or just random strangeness. Apart from that I still feel the same. Although I've SIed deeper than I usually would...

Not long 'til I have to go back to the psychiatrist now anyway, so I'll see what he has to say :)

Medication can take a few weeks to work so you won't know how effective it's going to be just yet. What you're experiencing could be side-effects and it might be worth a mention to your psychiatrist at your next appointment.

They don't usually like giving under 18's diagnoses, but they possibly think that you are depressed.

I was on prozac at either 16/17 (can't remember!) but had no diagnosis either. Just displayed symptoms of depression.

Either way, I hope it helps & you get answers.
Take care.
