2.5 Years Cut Free, A Question

I mainly lurk on forums, so I doubt anyone here knows me. I used to be on the old ryl boards and I think my name was SycoTrekkie then. Anyway, I've been cut-free since July 2005. It's been a hard road and not without its bumps, mountains, and valleys.

But, that's not what I came to say. I was wondering if any of you ex-cutters have odd sensations where you used to cut. I was never one to cut deeply.. Mostly cat scratch depth.... But sometimes the area tingles, itches, or aches. I do have some minor scarring...It just seems strange to me that I still have these sensations. Sometimes it can be very triggering (though I never follow through).

Anyone else experience this? Thanks for any replies and enlightenment you might be able to grant me.

I quite often get pain and itching in places around where I've cut.. my boyfriend kinda likened it to phantom limb syndrome, like where people can still "feel" their limb after it's been amputated. But yeah- I officially stopped March 2005, but I've had 5 big slip ups since then. I kinda know what you're going through.

Thank you for your replies.

Twisted Fate- Rubbing could be part of it. I wear knee-highs everyday so my scars are constantly being touched by that fabric.

shadow- Thank you!

Kellysharmonica- I hadn't thought about that. I guess the area could "remember" all the attention it used to get.

The only theory I came up with on my own was that there is more scar tissue under the skin than I can see (due to repetitive cutting in the same area). And that it gets irritated due to one thing or another. I can't see the irritation on the outside, but it is irritated on the inside... I dunno. Trying to explain it makes me doubt my own theory!

Before starting again, I went 5 years without cutting myself and during that time I realize that some of the area where I use to cut was more sensible and there is one little part of my left arm that aches some times.

Congratulations for the 2.5 years, I'm really proud

When I'm cold, my more prominant scares will hurt sometimes - ache... but I think that is becuase they are deeper too.

I think these Phantom feelings happen with other things too - so I don't think it's anything to worry about... if you are?!

HUGE congrats with being free for soooo long *hugs*

Well done on your 2.5 years, that is such a great achievement!!

Some of my scars very occasionally get itchy or irritated for no apparent reason...I guess it's just scar tissue and clothes rubbing.

I wouldn't worry too much unless it's something that is persistant and interferes with your life.

I love you Sean

Wow, lots of replies since I last checked... I was supposedly subscribed, but I stopped getting email notifications. Weird.

Anyway, I think I figured it out. The other day I was getting up off the floor (that's where I put on my shoes) and I accidentally pressed down on the scars on my leg. And it felt weird and then it kinda ached and hurt... Differently than when I press down on other, untouched areas of skin. I think they ache when something presses on them (my hand, other leg, clothes, etc). And also, I do think the cold weather might have something to do with it.

There's definately some scar tissue under there that I can't see from the outside. I'm not worried about it. I was just curious to find out if any one else experiences the same thing. Now I feel slightly less weird than usual. lol
