Well, the little fella finally arrived on tuesday. But what a story to go with it. Had to go in to hospital sunday to be induced, so turned up about two, and at about half five was given a pessary to try and start labour. Six hours later, i got what i thought was the most unbearable back pain, which kept me awake all night, so by the time jamie and my parents turned up for their visit i had not slept for twenty nine hours. Was given a second pessary at half six, and after that could not eat, despite nags from the midwife. What i did eat came back up and spent the rest of the night with my head over a sick bowl. About eleven that night, the back pain returned, only this time i was in so much pain i was crying and trying everything. Midwife explained that the baby was positioned with his back against my spine which was causing the pain, but there was nothing they could do about it as i had tried everything already. So i stood there begging for a c section. Now, those that know me probably know i'm petrified of hospitals as it is and under normal circumstances you would never get me near one, let alone ask for an operation. At half six was taken down to the labour ward to see if a pethidine injection was available. Unfortunately, the guy who could authorise it before a certain stage of labour was trying to deal with another patient, so was given chance to use birthing pool to try and reposition baby. Jamie was phoned and he turned up at half seven. Straight away joked about he should have known he could find me in the bath. Ten minutes later my waters broke, but only slightly. So was taken back to the delivery suite where they started monitoring the baby again. At half eight i was 3.5cm dilated. It usually takes a while to get from that stage to fully dilated. Asked for gas and air, and my god that stuff should replace anti depressants! Started joking with jamie and the midwife. Something along the lines of someone should tell the stoners that this stuff is legal and free. Took the mick out of a male doctor that walked in and made a comment along lines of how well i was doing. So my reply was great, and how was your last labour? Poor jamie started apologizing on my behalf and was told it was ok, only the effect the gas and air has. By 11.45 i felt the need to push. Midwife said it was probably too early as i hadn't been in labour long but checked and found out the little fella was already crowning. So was told to start pushing and advised to leave out the gas and air so i could feel when i needed to push. After that became adamant i needed the loo. She explained it was baby pressing slightly on the bowel, but i was adamant and in the end said ok, but if i do something here, it's your fault. Anyway. The little fella was finally born at 1.07pm weighing 10lb 3oz, or for you metric types that's 4.6 kg. Even midwife expressed her suprise that i had done it using only gas and air and poor jamie stood there looking astonished. And then said "i'm never calling you a wimp again". Anyway. We've called him Darrell and he is the most adorable little boy in the world. And funny as well. He obviously knows who his parents are, because much to everyones amusement, as mum was holding him, he managed to form devil horns with his left hand! I can honestly say i'm now the happiest new mum in the world. This baby is so wanted and has been since a year before he was conceived, by both me and jamie.

Well done hun! Baby was facing up instead of down. I've heard that is rather painful. Was it a last minute move by baby? Did you use a gym/birthing ball? I've heard that bouncing on one (squatted down, using it for support) is a really good way to turn the baby into the best position (both for breech and upside down babies! cant remember what the techincal term for upside down babies is!!)
I can't wait for mine to come out, I got 14weeks left though! I have decided I don't like pregnancy and all it's pains/wierd stuff. mand x

Dear me, mand, what about the kicks though. Makes it worth it, knowing there's someone in there who depends on you already and will for a long time. Tried a birthing ball, but didn't help as i couldn't stay sat down long enough to use it. The term for upside down babies is cephalic or something like that... I take it, you mean babies that are head down. But a breech birth. God, imagine the pain! X

Oh, mand, just reread your message and realised what you meant. He was back to front, i think the midwives meant, not upside down. Can be just as painful though! Cos his back was pressed against my spine which displaces the mothers spine and causes the extreme cases of back ache.
yeah i meant head down...but facing the floor/ceiling (whichever is wrong!) I know it can be painful, well... your spine is a sensitive place anyway... without another set of bones rubbing against it.
My friend's baby was the same, she used to put her ironing board down low, sit on a bierthing ball and bounce/iron/watch tv all at same time.
glad you got a bundle!
the kicks...hmmm... wierd lol! and painful when she kicks my hernia and uncomfortable when she decides to practise trampolining on ym bladder or stomach. I get such bad reflux when she wakes up!

Mand, wait til the baby is engaged. You know, when the head is in the pelvis. You get zero bladder space then! Lol! Jamie counted my loo trips one night and he fell asleep after eleven of them. As for the kicks, rod the tv, watching the kicks is more fun than the soaps omnibuses! Talking of which, labour is never anything like any of the soap characters!
i already have a lot of pelvic pain, turning in bed feels like someone is ripping some muscle or other... not sure which, i'm guessing my pelvic floor muscles, i'm doing kegels and have been for years but gawd it hurts and first thing in the morning i cant open/lift/bend my legs because of the pain. i either sit up watching tv in bed until i can move, or matt has to dress me.
also i shuffle like an old woman.
and the sacro illiac joints (back of the hips) keep me awake in pain most nights.
i just want baby out lol! i'm delighted to be pregnant...just not enjoying pregnancy. also i've borken out in pizza-face-style spots. i thought i was supposed to be blooming now?? mand x

Congratulations! I'm well proud of you. Your labour sounded really difficult compared to mine. My waters broke naturally, and eight hours later she was out - 25mins after we arrived at the hospital! I had gas and air too, that stuff was good! They didn't tell me you were only meant to use it during contractions - I very nearly fell asleep, baby half out! 10lbs 3 is an amazing weight! My baby - Madeleine - was 7lb 15. Did you tear? Because if you did lavendar oil in the bath was quite good for me. I tore, I think it was because Madeleiene's hand was on her head making her bigger than she was.
Mandimoo - how much longer have you got to go? I hated the last few months of pregnancy. So uncomfortable. You hang in there, it'll get better.
