I also have a promise with one of my friends, and find it helps to talk to them and explain how you feel.
I also heard that drawing a butterfly on your arm in permanent marker helps. Name it someone who you really care about and wants you to stop (in this case, you could name it the person who you have the promise with) and each time you feel like harming, look at it. If you harm before the butterfly has washed away, then it has died. But don't get too upset about it, just draw another one and try again. Keep drawing them untill the hard times have gone, and you no longer feel like harming x
