Closer link between SI and depression then borderline
So a while back ago I posted a questionnaire about SI. The results yielded a link between SI and depression. As far as the DSM goes, the only disorder that has SI as criteria is borderline personality disorder (and in autism I think but that’s different). From what I’ve read, borderline personality disorder is commonly misdiagnosed, especially in those who SI.
If you are curious to check out the Questionnaire here is the link: http://www.recoveryourlife.com/forum...ad.php?t=23067
Although the results can’t be completely accurate since a lot of people hadn’t sought professional help, there was a noticeable pattern in those who had and were diagnosed with something.
Of the responses the top results were:
30 people had a form of depression
9 people had anxiety
7 PTSD
5 Bipolar Disorder
5 Borderline Personality Disorder
4 OCD
(most results were obtained from ryl but not all)
Personally I think its time for the mental health professionals to reevaluate SI and consider that borderline personality disorder very well may not be the most common connection. These results suggest that there is a need for further classification of Self Injury.
An excerpt from a paper I wrote:
There has been evidence to suggest that there is a connection between serotonin and irritability; “A 1997 study concluded that serotonin’s main behavioral effect is on irritability, and that the type of aggressive behavior shown in response to irritation seems to be dependent on levels of serotonin” (Holmes 26). People with low levels of serotonin can be prone to irritably and aggressive behavior. The importance of this study is that medication may be useful in helping alleviate some of the emotional distress in Self Injures. While people may be more prone to irritability and impulsive behaviors, it is not the only factor that may lead an individual to find refuge in hurting themselves.
Depression studies have shown that people tend to have low levels of serotonin which can be inferred that plays a role in some individuals SI. While this isn’t the only cause of SI, it seems to be a fairly common one.

I've been diagnosed with BPD for a few years now.
I believe I may have it but I also think I used to be very depressed however I was only ever considered to have BPD.
About 5 months ago I was started on an anti-depressent (that actually worked) and since then my mood has improved greatly and I also have had a huge reduction in my self-harming.
So yeah I defiantly think depression plays a big role in self-harming and not just BPD.
