Have you consulted with your dr about all this? Did you speak with HR or Occupational Health before making this decision?
You shouldn't have had to resign just because you're ill. You could have taken long term sick leave, and had sick pay. That's probably a bit late now, unfortunately.
But yes, there should be benefits you're entitled to. Also, did you take out a mortgage payment protection plan/insurance thing? If so that should cover you in some way.
