I realise this is nothing new but I have recently noticed a lot of celebrity endorsement of various products. We are apparently supposed to believe the spice girls shop in tesco's and that a lot of singers also have an interest in perfume making. Cynical as I am I can't say I believe it. I also wonder if anybody is actually influenced by that. Do people actually say i must have that cheese because thats Justin Timberflakes favourite? I would find it worrying if people are that easily duped.
Any thoughts?

I think a 10 year old is probably going to be influenced, not anyone over 18. If they are, then we have problems. I buy stuff because I like them, not because some famous twerp bums them. I'm 21 years old and I'm not easily influenced-not by some washed up celebrity or whatever.
The Spice Girls don't make me want to run down to Tesco, they make me want to rip my ears off because their music is awful!
i would hope people dont do that. it doesnt influence me in the slightest. it hacks my partner off no end though, he is now refusing to shop in tescos because of the spice girls ad, and he has stopped using his catalogue because of trinny and suzannah. a little bit extreme in my book, but he feels that way, so be it.
does no one else laugh at the adverts? that ad for unforgivable by sean jean or whatever, p diddy i dont care, it makes me laugh.
the advert for lovely by sarah jessica parker, she does not look in the least bit attractive i always go ew, what happened.
and much as i love christina aguilera's voice, her advert sucks. nice perfume though.

i'm not influenced to buy things because someone famous is in the advert, no.
i know it's not entirelyyy the same thing, but then, if i see someone in a magazine &they're wearing some dress from [wherever] &i think it looks pretty, i might go out & buy it, or something similar [&probably cheaper] to that. but that's not because it's a famous person wearing it, it's just cos i've been alerted to the fact that that dress exists.
I'm beginning to wonder if advertisement of any kind has an effect. I don't think i've ever conciously seen an ad and thought i must buy that. In fact it would be interesting to see what would happen if somebody ran an advert telling them not to buy whatever product, see how it effected sales.

I can't say I've ever been influenced by advertising. But i think what adverts do is more subtle than just telling you to buy things. They tell you about social relationships and help form our identities as well as telling us what we should care about. They turn you into a target market and then sell things to you as a market. the best thing you can do is think for yourself and work out if you really need the product that you're buying, and try and base your decisions on what you're buying on something other than the fact that someone has told you that you need it.
you can never get out of it though. for example, a large proportion of my wages go to the health food shop every week. just because i don't shove chemical crap onto myself, there are still products that are designed for people like me and marketted to people like me. at the end of the day, if you have to buy one product then you've got to pick the lesser of the evils.
sorry, i can't express myself very well today.

How could you become as awesome as you are and still feel like a loser?
personally I don't think celeb adverts have any effect in that way, but usually I don't even know or like the celebs who are doing the advertising.
and when the Mr T 'GET SOME NUTS!' advert came out, My friends actually did walk straight to a shop and get about 5 snickers bars each because Mr T told them to. Even I was tempted to get a snickers bar because I loved mr T and the advert and I don't even like Nuts!

I don't think it is designed to make people buy the product because a certain celebrity is featured in the advert, I think the celebrities are used in the adverts purely to get your attention in the advert as a whole.
And there is a lot of money in it for the celebrities too. George Forman has made a lot more from those grills than he ever did from prize money from his boxing career, for example.
Personally it has the opposite influence on me, always has done. I can remember being about 12 I had a pair of those back extremely baggy combat trousers with the threads hanging off, next week picture of hearsay wearing them in a magazine, I wouldn't wear them out for ages.
Oh and those iceland adverts with Kerry Katona....annoy the hell out of me! If she really fed her kids on all that frozen rubbish they'd all be spherical and hyperactive.Although maybe if she actually eats their processed rubbish it explains her slightly maniacal cheery grin. I'd really rather my mum didn't go to iceland thankyou very much.

lolz.
Yeah they dont work on me, infact i dont really give a damn, non of its going make me go ohh i want that, and the spice girls one makes me laught, like theyd ever go into tescos, they would rub there nose down at it because its too common for them.
and the icland one ha ha, its jus thier faces that make me laught, the whole fake smiles and over-acting
"Its not how long a star shines, what is remembered is the brightness of the light"
Then it would still be drawing attention to the product and so would probably increase sales.
That is kinda my point, Obviously they are going to say this product is great you should try it. Obviously you aren't going to trust that. So they might aswell just put it on screen tell you what it is and you can decide for yourself

I pretty much agree with that.
But you can totally tell Stephen Fry actually drinks Twinnings tea :)
Hmm. Well I don't much like any advertising, to be honest.
And I'm not sure I can comment on celebrities endorsing products, since I don't really 'dig' celebrities. Apart from Charlie Brooker.
Though...I don't see how it's any different from other forms of advertising?

I don't think its any different, I just find it odd, they pay a lot of money for those people to do the ad's so it must have an effect I just don't see why.
Stephen Fry is one of my icons but still its not going to effect which tea I buy.

I don't think half the adverts out there are meant to be believable, maybe Mel C or one of the others might shop at Tesco, but Victoria Beckham certainly wouldn't, she doesn't even live in the UK most of the time! I think anyone who sees that advert and goes OMGZ AS IF THE SPICE GIRLS SHOP AT TESCO must be a few picnics short of a basket.
I think that alot of celebs advertise stuff because they're trying to make people feel like they have more in common with them, it's sort of saying "Look, I use these things/wear these clothes/shop at this superrmarket/need to dye the grey out of my hair just like any normal person does, just like you!". It's also extra money in their bank accounts and one of the best ways to get themselves noticed more.
Think about it... how many times do you see a certain advert in the space of a week? Maybe once or twice if you don't watch much television, more if you do!
this is the first day of my life
I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
But now I don’t care I could go anywhere with you
And I’d probably be happy

Even if someone I really liked started advertising a certain brand I still wouldnt buy it - its not as if it benefits the celebrity.
What pees me off is Kylie Minogue... her musics crap! no seriously...after she had cancer she had/still has SO much potential to due something worthwhile for women/cancer charities etc....
What does she do?........bring out a friggin perfume!!
She could be advertising post-surgery bras, charities, merchandise on behalf or charities etc
Im getting really pissed off with this celebrity obsessed society - most of them dont even deserve the publicity/money
I agree that it is an attention-grabber thing.
If you hear Suchand Such's voice on the tv, you are going to turn around and see if you are right about who it is.
I am pissed at the US Presidential celebrity endorsements. ****ers, you have enough stupid **** that influences the election...must we really add this as well?
I would just like to say their campains are working.
The simple fact we remember and talk about their adverts and their products means they got their aim. increased sales come after the name becomes common to us. Majority of people buy brands they know and recognise so by making us remember their product it should encrease their sales.
I mean yea I don't like JT or care what cheese he eats, but if he did advertise a cheese, we talked about it and I then went shopping at tescos, there is a higher chance I would buy the cheese he advertised than I would have before because I would recognise the name.
