Lithium - why are you prescribed this?

I've been on Lithium for over 10 years
I'm just wondering why you've been prescribed it?

I *think* I was prescribed it because of treatment resistant major psychotic depression

my diagnosis has changed now to schizoaffective disorder - depressive type

I don't know anyone who has been prescribed lithium for depression only for bipolar

I'm wondering about asking for a different mood stabiliser as I'm concerned about the long term side effects (it's already affected my thyroid. I'm now on levothyroxine).

Hey. I'm prescribed lithium for depression. I do have highs but at the moment my diagnosis is just depression. I know other people who are taking it for the same reason. I don't think it's that uncommon actually. My psych seems quite fond of lithium (he described it as a "wonder drug" haha).

I guess it's just weighing up the risks and benefits. Do you find the lithium helpful? Lithium does have risks associated with it but then so do all medications. I think it's probably a good idea to have this conversation with your psychiatrist so you can weigh up the pros and cons together.

"I know you're sad, so I won't tell you to have a good day. Instead, I advise you to simply have a day.
Stay alive, feed yourself well, wear comfortable clothes, and don't give up on yourself just yet.
It'll get better. Until then, have a day."

thanks Serendipity. I had a look on the web and found some info saying it's used for depression too.

I do find lithium helpful. I've just had to increase the dose as my last 3 blood tests showed a lower lithium level.

Yes, I am seeing my consultant in a few months if I'm still bothered about it, I'll speak to him then about the long term side effects

thanks for responding
