Hi, I don't know what health care system you are working with- but if you cannot afford the $190 fee maybe ask that same person for a referral to a free or reduced fee service. Some places have what they call a "sliding scale" for persons who find it difficult to pay to get the same services at a reduced price. I am sorry they did not tell you about the fee before you had the session, and that your mum cancelled the referral.
Did they recommend CBT or did you think it would help? Definitely let them know about the challenges re paying and see if they can assist.
I would not advise taking any medication without medical advice from a doctor. Some side effects can be really dangerous.
Although GP/PCPs are not experts in psychiatric issues and medication- it is still better to see them instead of self medicating. Do you have a regular doctor?
If things get really bad, it is best to go to the emergency room if you feel unsafe.
Don't give up. Look for drop in centres/ clinics and support groups for depression or anxiety that might be offered in your area too.
