Dermatillomania (skin picking disorder)

Can anyone with dermatillomania tell me how they were diagnosed and what their treatment is? I think I might have it but I'm too embarrassed to mention it to the psychiatrist.

Hey, sorry that you haven't had any responses to this yet. What makes you embarrassed to mention this to the psychiatrist? I hope you'll feel able to bring it up so that hopefully you'll be able to work towards reducing the skin picking. It's not something I know a lot about but would having some sort of fidget toy to keep your hands occupied (particularly at times of heightened anxiety) help at all?

I assume people got diagnosed when telling their psychiatrist, so I'm afraid there's no way around that if you want support.

As far as treatment goes Google says that habit reversal training, stimulus control and CBT can be helpful. Apparently there's even medication that is sometimes prescribed off label.

Hi lilred,

Did you manage to talk to anyone about this or your psychiatrist or perhaps did you look into some therapy like La arana discoteca suggested?
