News made me terrified about my holiday

I'm due to go on holiday to Thailand in January, but I saw the news this morning, about all the bombing/explosions, I'm going to Northern Thailand, and the bombings have been in the south, but it still makes me no less terrified about going, especially as they appear to be targeting tourist spots.

My holiday is already booked and payed for, and after all the work I've had to put in to be able to go, I don't want to cancel and lose my money.

I know January is a long way off yet, but that isn't actually making me feel better, if anything it's making me feel worse, as it gives me longer to think and worry about it.

I usually like flying, but now I'm even terrified about the idea of flying, I'm becoming paranoid about the thought, and possibility of there being a bomb on the plane, I don't know what to do to keep myself calm

I feel you. I have these thoughts all the time about travelling and living in London.

It's important to remember it's unlikely to happen, but to take precautions and stay vigilant. Remember you can't let the terrorists win by letting them rule your life. Our freedom is worth more than that.

I know it's hard but maybe distance yourself from the news.

And is there anyway of getting some prn for the flight to help you with anxiety? My boyfriend gets prescribed diazapam for flights because he has anxiety about flying.

I'm trying really hard to distance myself from the news, but it's so hard, especially when my dad makes comments about the good effect on the money exchange rates, kinda' a little insensitive, although that's my dad all over, he says some really stupid things when he's drunk, but I do see another point to his crazy statement, to try to lighten the mood a little, adding a touch of humour to a pretty horrific situation, maybe he's trying to make himself feel a touch better about it, but deep down really he's terrified too, I'm not really sure.

I'm not sure about a PRN for the flight, as I think Diazepam is a bit of a waste of time, considering I'm on Ritalin, so not sure what would be best in respect of a PRN, but I'm definitely going to speak to my GP, as I have to get a script for a months supply of Ritalin to take with me anyway, and also get a medical certificate, and a copy of my script just to be able to take my Ritalin with me, I went through days of research to find out exactly what I'd need, just to take my Ritalin with me.

I see my psych a month before I go too, so maybe my psych will have some suggestion of what I could try as a PRN.

I'm not gonna let it stop me going or ruin my life and freedom, but I am thinking about precautions like having my mobile phone from day 1/as soon as possible when I get there, with a Thai sim card, so I'm able to make calls in the event of an emergency, I'm gonna do some research on emergency numbers etc, and numbers for the local hospital closest our hotel, I'm gonna be vigilant about any suspicious looking unattended bags/devices, if I see any, stay in a group with family at all times, and be vigilant at Bangkok airport while waiting for my transfer to Chiang Mai, I have a 2 and a half hour wait between flights, I'll stay in the terminal, and if there is added/hyped security, I'll try to stay close by to the security officers for extra safety, I'll also have my medication and Passport on me at all times, should I need them at any time, but for now, I think it's time to forget about it.

I think I might go out to town tomorrow see a few friends, try to take my mind off of it :)

Also my sister went to Paris just after a attack it was really safe as there was alot more security than normal. Hope u enjoy your holiday when u go x

Usually after any type of attack like that security gets tightened immediately and everyone is more vigilant and so it's a lot safer. I would suggest to try and not think about it and avoid the news. Sometimes I get scared, I live fairly close to London and I visit there a lot but I try to just live my life as normal otherwise terrorists win and it is very unlikely to be caught up in something like that.

I know that terrorism can happen anywhere, but Northern Thailand is very different from the South, much less touristy and thus probably safer. I've just come back from there and its a lovely place so please try and look forward to it! There is only do much you can prepare for an emergency anyway so don't let it cloud your thoughts.

Hi guys, thanks for all the replies, and reassurance, I have been feeling a touch better and calmer about things, and spent the whole day with a friend yesterday, repairing her laptop, something I love, and that gives me a sense of achievement, it's great when I see it working properly for the first time in a long time, now I just have to create a few backup discs for her so she doesn't lose her personal files, I backed them up temporarily on a flash drive, but do need it back, think she's just chuffed that her laptop is finally working :)

I'm also trying to focus on the positives, like my new clothes I've bought for the holiday, plus my new suitcase and luggage straps, I'm looking forward to packing my suitcase, but still dreading the travel and am apprehensive and anxious about the flight, I want my love for flying back, I think I will get it back, but it'll just take time for me to feel safe and happy about flying again, may take a few safe flights before I get that love for flying back. I'm seeing my counsellor Friday, and possibly the nurse with the Community Drug and Alcohol Team, so gonna discuss my current fears about flying with them, see if they have any suggestions on a prn or other ways of staying calm during the flight :)

that's great, i'm glad you're feeling a bit better and managed to do something that makes you feel accomplished.

I think talking to your workers is a good plan. Let us know how it goes!
