What tablets are people taking if they have "Borderline Personality Disorder". All I keep getting prescribed are anti depressants. And I don't know why.
Hey. If you're confused or unsure about the medication you're prescribed it would be a good idea to talk to your doctor about it. Do you feel like you could do that?
I think people with BPD are often given antidepressants because depression often occurs with, or as part of BPD, and they can help with those symptoms. But everyone is different and some people find different types of medication, to target different symptoms, helpful, and some people don't find it useful at all. It's really a case of working out what will be helpful for you and the things that you struggle with, which is why it's a good idea to talk it through with your doctor or a professional who knows you.
Have you been offered any other support or therapy alongside the tablets?
My doctor is new as I have moved to a new area and she is really dismissive. Plus she hasn't even bothered to get my old records. And I literally went for my appointment was in their five minutes and got offered tablets. She wrote the prescription out and that was it.
I think your doctor is supposed to offer you information on the tablets you are taking as well. Judging from what you just said, and the concerns you expressed on the BPD thread, I'm guessing she didn't say anything about possible side effects such as initial worsening of depressive symptoms and so on.
I am almost 100% sure you can ask to have your doctor changed(unless she's the only one in your area, and there's no one else available).
As for tablets and BPD, Hannah is right: the antidepressants are prescribed to deal with your depression(and maybe anxiety, if that's something you deal with). BPD is (obviously) a personality disorder - which means it affects your patterns of thoughts and feelings, and therefore your reactions to everything that happens. This is something that is best treated with psychotherapy(reportedly, DBT has had some amazing results in quite a few people, though there are more options out there when it comes to therapy); meds can't really help with all this, but they can help treat depression and anxiety, and other disorders that may appear together with BPD.
Indigo said everything I was going to say! Medication can be useful for treating co-morbid conditions (things you have alongside the BPD like depression). As for the BPD itself, your best way of learning to cope and manage is to have therapy. Personally I did DBT which helped immensely, then recently had CBT which kind of topped up things I'd learned a while ago that needed refreshing.

It can take a little while for notes to be transferred. I think it's meant to be 3-6 weeks, but the last few times mine have taken a lot longer.
In regards to medication you said you "keep being prescribed antidepressants" so I assume your previous doctor did too? I wonder if he explained why then? Antidepressants are a very common medication and I wonder if she was going on your history of having had them before.
There's no one medication for BPD; people who take medication who have BPD are taking it for specific symptoms like depression or anxiety, rather than because there's a medication specially for BPD.
It doesn't matter where you come from; it matters where you go.

I've been with these doctors for 6 months but I suppose the other week was my first appointment, I have taken these tablets before so I do know the risks (like it worsening ect). I just know people who have been prescribed different things and it really seems to help them but anti depressants don't help me at all. I need something to like calm me down. I get really anxious and then I start panicking about little things/big things/anything thats bugging me really and then I start thinking well whats the point? Last time I was like this I ended up being sectioned as I was drinking heavily and tried to jump out of a moving vehicle and even then my dad had to practically beg them to do something as he had ran out of options. When I got out I was supposed to get a phone call back about some sort of counselling but I never did. Then a few months later my mood started going downhill again so the crisis team was called out and they refered me to a mental health team. They were supposed to have another appointment but they never send me a letter or rang me so I gave up on my meds and just sort of got on with it. I've hit low points a few times since then but I always had my fiancee there to help me and he always knew what to say/do to help me. Even if he never just being there was enough to eventually calm me down. But now hes in prison so Ive in a sense lost the person who could help me when things got like this. But now there worse than ever because i'm stressing about him being in there and the fact he's not here with me. And I hate going to A+E as I feel like im wasting there time as they always tell me I have to kind of "do it myself" which if I could I wouldn't be there in the first place or that im "making it up and being dramatic". Like the last time I was talking to a person who wasn't there and he was telling me to do things like hit people and spit at them. I was drunk so I can kind of see their point of veiw but to me it felt so real it was scary. Nothing like that has happened since but I also get a feeling of sometimes im not all together there. Like im here but its a kind of dream. Like "is this real" sort of thing. I've tried explaining it but everyone says "its nothing to worry about just stress" or that "im making a big deal out of nothing". Everyone ive talked to about it seems so dismissive and all I get asked when I say this is "well what would you like us to do". And im like "Well I don't know whats why im here".
In theory I have BPD (it is currently under review), depression and anxiety and I am current and have pretty much always been med free due to other medical conditions being triggered by most anti-depressants. I'm also currently not in therapy as I learnt skills and found it was easier to do it alone. Different people find different things helpful.
I think it would be a good idea to go back to your GP and ask for a referral. You could see a different GP at the same practice if you'd feel more comfortable with that?
Im actually debating whether to go to A+E to see the crisis team tonight. It sounds mad but i have literally been putting it off for weeks. Like i've probably been told to go more than 5 times this past month and I refuse because I actually despise the place. And the people. They make you wait for hours to be told nothings wrong with you, your fine, go home.
I can tell my anti depressants are making me feel a lot worse though. I hardly want to leave my bed anymore. And I keep making plans in my head. I am exhausted of pretending i'm okay. I need a break.
Have you got a plan in place? Sorry you feel so bad right now. Please go to a&e if you feel that unsafe and things are unbearable. A&e isn't fun. What are you expecting to happen from going? X

I have had really bad experiences with crisis until recently. I have been seeing crisis lately since before and coming out of hospital and my experience was completely different. Like you I was scared and very sceptical, but the people were lovely and didn't make me feel bad. Yes, sometimes what they suggested was frustrating or not completely helpful, but that will always be the case I think anywhere. I think it's worth a try. You might end up speaking to someone who will be helpful and give you the support you need. Just try to remember what works with some people doesn't with others, so some suggestions they give might not always be right for you, but keep talking until they can help. I'm only saying that because it is something that has frustrated me in the past.
There are so many nice people in the world and like everywhere there are helpful kind people as well as not so helpful. I like to think there are more nice people than not. Give it a go. You clearly want to reach out and need extra support that they can give you.
If I was to kill myself I know how id do it. Ive always had a plan of sorts in my head. Its wether id actually go through with it but the more im sitting here trying to get through each day the more appealing the idea seems.
