Two Poems
Ordinary town
Ordinary trees
Ordinary leaves of every color.
Reds, yellows and oranges.
Ordinary cars lined up the street.
Sunday storm out of the blue.
It was quite a show.
Tornado watch issued.
Humid air against my skin.
Grey clouds in the sky that made me think “oh my”.
Rain falling to the ground.
Signs of tornado – absent.
No green sky.
Lightning streaking across the sky.
Thunder booming making me think “its God bowling in heaven”;
Switching channels; weather channel, movie, weather channel, movie, weather channel.
Longing to dance in the rain, be soaked from head to toe.
As the rain began to slow, I looked for rainbow.
Taste of fresh rain, as a tear that streaks down your cheek that smells like a fresh lake.
Hopes of a rainbows drowns in those ordinary puddles.
____
Yelling, screaming, waking me in fright
It was such an awful scene in full sight.
Mommy and Daddy are in a fight.
Coming into the light with
Tears streaking down my cheek,
Tasting salt for the first time tonight.
Wondering if mommy was okay.
‘Cuz daddy hit mommy in the chest tonight.
Cigarette smoke clinging and smothering my nightie
That was burning my lungs tonight.
Feeling me lifted from the ground
‘Cuz mommy and daddy are putting me back in bed for the 2nd time tonight.
It’s gonna be okay mommy said, just go back to bed.
I’ll read another book called “Big Red”.
How I longed for the fighting to stop.
Daddy’s been drinking again tonight.
Wondering if tomorrow if mommy was going to be here.
If the fighting I would overhear that would make me want to disappear.
