OCD Questions and Concerns

Hello all!

So I will just get straight to it. I was experiencing really invasive, unwanted and disturbing thoughts a little while ago. I won't give examples as not to trigger or upset anyone but I talked it over with my psychiatrist because they just repeated over and over in my head for hours at a time. I am 20 years old, I just started Prozac for anxiety and depression but my other diagnoses are bipolar disorder type one with psychosis, social anxiety and agoraphobia without panic disorder (still under review with the doc).

I started Prozac about two and a half months ago and aside from a few common side effects it did wonders for anxiety and depression. The only thing was that it made me a little manic. I don't know what's going on now but the thoughts are getting worse and my meds aren't working for me anymore and the anxiety and intrusive thoughts are getting much worse very quickly. I am starting to fear contamination. I recognize this because my girlfriend has OCD.

I talked over the earlier intrusive thoughts with my psychiatrist and she said that they are obsessions and started asking me questions that were linked to OCD.

My questions are this. Is this something to be concerned about? What can I do to cope in the mean time until I see her again? Could it be a med change that I need or could this be a sign of an oncoming disorder? If you have OCD, how and when did it start for you?

If you wish to talk to me in private feel free to private message me any time!

Love,

Rosie

Hi Rosie,

It's good you talked it over with your psychiatrist. I think in the meantime try not to get too worried about if it's OCD or not. The more you worry the more you may start to get convinced you have it.

With something like OCD and anxiety medication can be a helpful tool, but alongside it you really need some therapy like CBT which will challenge your negative and obsessive thoughts and give you ways to manage those thoughts without carry out compulsions, or developing compulsions.

Can you go back to your doctor and ask about therapy?

Even if you are in the early stages of developing OCD (or you may not be) it's so early that it can be treated quickly.

Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…

you once called your brain a hard drive, well say hello to the virus.
