Hey,

So Ive been on setraline for a couple months now, and am currently on 100mg a day. I had the normal side effects of ridiculous headache. Twitches. Upset stomach. Lack of sleep. But today I wet myself when I was in uni. I had absolutely no control, and didn't even realise I needed the toilet, I had been like half an hour before. What the frick is going on? And see when this happens, does it then happen often after?

Its ridiculous and embarrassing. I don't even know if Im feeling any effect from them, so not sure if the side effects are worth it.

That sounds so hard, I'm sorry this happened to you. After a couple of months, side effects should typically wear off. I'm not sure how likely it is that this would happen again. It sounds a little unusual too because gastrointestinal things are fairly common but I'm not sure about urinary stuff. Perhaps ask a pharmacist and look at the patient information leaflet?

Also, remember there are lots of other things you can try instead of sertraline so if you find the side effects are too much it's not the end of the road.

I think urinary incontinence is often a symptom of high stress/anxiety so it might not have something to do with the medication necessarily.

Maybe it's a sign that the medication isn't effective enough and perhaps it needs increasing/supplementing, maybe speak to your prescriber?

Thanks guys. Yeah, I wouldn't say at all I was stressed, or at least no more stressed than I have been in 6 months. It is considered one of the "less common, or rare" side effects. But theres very little info about it. Should go to the dr about it. But its such a stupid thing that I really don't want to

When I was growing up I had issues like this due to a traumatic home life. My parents didn't tell me that the doctor said it was due to anxiety and I went on thinking there was something wrong with me.

Sometimes I feel the physical manifestations of stress without feeling any more anxious in myself, this could be what's happen to you.

Maybe if you talk to your doctor they can give you something for the extra stress/anxiety and this may never happen to you again. I appreciate it's not a nice situation and isn't it worth talking to the doctor to try to ensure you're not going to be in that situation again?

There's nothing to be ashamed of and nothing wrong with you, you're doing the best you can with the stress/anxiety you're experiencing, the doctors will have seen it all before and want to help you out.

You are certainly not alone; I was on Sertraline 150mg for 3 years and came off it late last year and found it hell. However, it does get better; I can assure you. This won't last forever. Try and be open and honest with the people trying to help you; it can make the process a lot easier.

Sorry that happened to you. I was on setraline briefly but I just couldnt get on with it so it got changed. Hopefully the side effects will subside with time or it might be worth talking to gp about changing medications.

I had similar side effect when on sertaline. Strangely I've been off and on sertaline a few times and it was only this last time I had the problem with suddenly needing to pee or not making it to the toilet- it was beyond embarrassing. This last time was probably the longest I've taken it consistently as prescribed (I'm not good at remembering to take my meds unfortunately) and it wasn't until I had been taking it consistently for a few months that this side effect showed up. Like you said above it is a rare side effect, but does happen. Thank you for being brave enough to share this. I hope your dr can help
